#IT was mass elimination day on day four of the 38th Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic as the tournament field continues to dwindle ahead of this weekend’s pool championships.

#Several teams survived double headers and staved off elimination in the first two sessions of the day.

#And the final session featured a number of teams that won their opening games to highlight the 10-game slate.

#The Eight Mile Rock Blue Jays, Mt Carmel Cavaliers, CR Walker Knights and GHS Magic advanced while the RM Bailey Pacers, Temple Christian Suns, CW Saunders Cougars, Galilee, CV Bethel Stingrays, Jack Hayward Wildcats and St John’s Giants were all eliminated from the competition.

#The final session featured a GSSSA playoff rematch with the Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins versus the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves, Akhepran versus Sunland and CC Sweeting Cobras vs the Gateway Christian Eagles.

#However, the results were not available up to press time last night.

#The Knights won by default in the first game of the afternoon to advance.

#Temple Christian Suns – 20

#John McKenzie and Micah Moss each scored seven points while Joshua Fawkes and Billy Michel controlled the boards with 10 and 14 rebounds respectively. Taleo Bethel led the Suns with eight points.

#Both teams struggled shooting from the field for much of the afternoon.

#The Jaguars shot just 29 per cent (17-58) from the field and were 0-17 from three-point range, but the Suns were even worse at 20 per cent (7-35).

#The Jaguars outrebounded the Suns 47-27 and outscored by 12 on fastbreak points.

#The Jaguars, in a rebuilding year following their appearance in last year’s tournament championship game, overcame a night two loss to Queen’s College.

#St John’s Giants – 40

#CW Saunders Cougars – 36

#Deangelo Dawkins led the Giants with a double double – 11 points and 11 rebounds – Justin Burrows finished with 10 points while Curtis Newbold had eight points and seven rebounds. Julian Thompson led the Cougars with nine points and 10 rebounds while Lamont McPhee scored eight.

#Thompson made a free throw at the 3:12 mark to cut the lead to one (37-36). Both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes before Newbold made a free throw and Kamren Small’s layup with five seconds left to play put the game away for good.

#Eight Mile Rock Blue Jays – 54

#Galilee – 48

#In the first overtime game of the tournament, Alex Minus was the catalyst for the Blue Jays’ offence late as they outscored Galilee 9-3 down the stretch.

#Galilee scored the opening score of the extra period but were held without a field goal the remainder of the game. Vincent Mackey made a free throw and Minus scored on a layup to take a 48-47 lead with 2:05 left to play. After a Fredereck Moxey free throw tied the game at 48, Minus scored three of the next five points to put the game away.

#Minus finished with 11 points to tie Alex Minus and Jason Johnson for the team high in scoring while Dajuan Bevans scored nine.

#Moxey led Galilee with 14 points, Colin Palmer had 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Theodore Hanna had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

#St George’s and Eight Mile Rock are scheduled to face off in today’s opening session.

#Mt Carmel Cavaliers – 48

#CV Bethel Stingrays – 46

#Mt Carmel went scoreless in the game’s final two minutes and nearly squandered an eight-point lead down the stretch.

#Shemar Easy led the Cavaliers with 14 points, Dustin Storr scored nine, Jayden Johnson scored eight and Antanel Pierre finished with seven points and 14 rebounds.

#Donte Whyms led the Stingrays with a game high 20 points and 10 rebounds while Warren Miller scored eight.

#Jayden Johnson’s jumper gave the Cavaliers a 48-40 lead with 2:06 left to play but the Stingrays just ran out after Whyms’ final layup with two seconds left to play.

#CR Walker Knights – 42

#Jack Hayward Wildcats – 30

#The Knights came in well rested after a default win in their first game of the day, they got off to a slow start and trailed 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.

#They rallied to outscore the Wildcats 14-8 in the second quarter and trailed just 20-18 at the half. CR Walker went ahead for good with a dominant third quarter where they allowed just a single field goal and won the quarter 13-2 and led 31-22 headed into the fourth.
