We began playing softball in the Bahamas in the early forties.
The Bahamas Softball Federation was formed in 1972 and was immediately recognised by the government of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. While the Bahamas Softball Federation came into existance in 1972, the first competition for the Bahamas on the international stage happen in 1966 in Mexico, where the Bahamas finished sixth. This tournament gave birth to the Central American and Caribbean Softball Confederation.
The Bahamas soon thereafter became affiliated with the International Softball Federation (ISF), the Pan American Softball Confederation (CONPASA), and the Confederation of Caribbean Softball Confederation (CONCACAS).
Since then both the Bahamas’ men and ladies teams have excelled to third place in the world at the world championships and having competed in all regional championships.
In the late nineties, the Bahamas Softball Federation commissioned Mr. Gary Corbert out of Canada to do an assessment of softball in the Bahamas, its strengths and weaknesses. It was revealed that over thirty thousand persons between the age of eight to sixty seven plays softball in either
(a) Primary school boys and girls
(b) Junior boys and girls
(c) Senior girls and boys
(d) Adult ladies and men
The games are played in slow pitch, modified pitch, and fast pitch.
There are ongoing training for coaches, game officials, and players, locally and internationally, as well as the administrators often attend the all important international conferences of the various affiliates.
In May of 2011, the Bahamas was the host country where the English Caribbean Softball Confederation was formed. The Bahamas, along with Aruba, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, and the US Virgin Islands assembled and made up the founding members under the observance of then-ISF President Mr. Don Porter.
The Bahamas continues to develop in its many facets of the game and enjoys a cordial relationship with its regional and world affiliates.
