#AMIDST the majestic sight of A, B and C Class sloops in Montagu Bay last weekend, there were two other boat fleets out on the water, most of which were being sailed by junior sailors aged 17 and under.

#For the first time ever, The Best of the Best Regatta included an all – junior line up in the E Class which was spearheaded by Dallas Knowles of Exuma Sailing Club.

#Meanwhile, on Saturday and Sunday, the Sunfish Junior and Open National Championships took place, providing a colourful display of multi-coloured sails out in the bay.

#Many of the junior participants showed off their sailing versatility in both class fleets. Of the 11 E Class, six were Exuma boats, all of which made the seven-boat final.

#Despite their strong lead in the qualifiers, Joss Knowles and Keshaune Hutchinson in Lady Kayla came in second in Sunday’s final to Andros boat Captain Peg sailed by Mary Jac Nash and Eliza Denning of Lyford Cay Sailing.

#Alvington McKenzie and Trevor Brown Jr came in third in Exuma’s Miss Agnes.

#The Sunfish Nationals began on Saturday afternoon after the E Class had finished their morning race, enabling the visiting sailors (nine from Exuma and three from Grand Bahama) and Craig Ferguson of The Bahamas National Sailing School to switch out their boats and rig up a Sunfish.

#A total fleet of 23 boats headed out onto the course, 19 juniors and four adults.

#Very breezy conditions of 16-18 knots with higher gusts made things tricky for the less experienced, a couple of whom had to retire early.

#However, two races were completed that day and a further four followed on Sunday after the E Class final had ended.

#Overall winner in the Sunfish Open Championship was Paul de Souza, former Junior Sunfish world champion and head coach with the National Sailing School.

#A fantastic performance in second overall and first in the junior fleet, was 15-year-old Craig Ferguson, beating Donnie Martinborough of The Nassau Yacht Club, a multiple time world champion in the class.

#Ellieanne Higgs, 14, of the Royal Nassau Sailing Club, finished second and Alvington McKenzie of Exuma came in third in the junior fleet.

#An awards presentation followed at the Nassau Yacht Club, from where both the E Class and the Sunfish had launched and where the sloops had been moored over the days of the event.

#Emma Tinkler, director of The Bahamas National Sailing School, said: “It has been wonderful to see our Family Island friends back in Nassau again since the disruption to our programmes due to COVID. The Exuma Sailing Club has extended an invitation to all the Nassau junior sailors to join them next April for The National Family Island Regatta in Georgetown for some more exciting E Class action”.

#“This past week has been a wonderful example of inter-island sailing camaraderie. It has also proven how, while all boat classes have their own unique traits and parameters, a basic understanding of sailing principles can be applied to sail many types of boat. Several of the current top Bahamian sloop sailors, for example, began their sailing careers in a little Optimist training boat and we have seen how the talented Craig Ferguson, an accomplished Optimist sailor, transferred his sailing know-how smoothly this weekend from Sloop to Sunfish, as did Alvington McKenzie, Tanaj Manos, Carmen Forbes, Aiden Musgrove and the many other Exuma and Grand Bahama sailors. Bahamian professional basketball player with the Indiana Pacers Chavano “Buddy” Hield is in elite company, having become the second-fastest player in National Basketball Association (NBA) history to reach 1,500 made three-pointers. He accomplished that feat on Monday in an 112-104 win for the Pacers over the Golden State Warriors.

Ironically, the fastest player is Warriors guard Stephen Curry, the most prolific three-point shooter in NBA history. It is a great measuring stick for Hield. Hield is ranked at number 43 on the all-time list for made three-pointers. He has exactly 1,500 made three-pointers in 492 games. Next on the list is current Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love with 1,506 three-pointers. Once Hield remains healthy, he should crack the top 40 by the end of this calendar year. The sharpshooter ranks at number 16 on the active players list and is the only player on the active player top 20 list that has played under 600 games.

Hield’s 1,500th three-point shot came from the top of the arc in the fourth quarter of their game against the Warriors. There was 8:39 left on the clock. It gave the Pacers a 95-93 lead at that point of the game. Hield finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Hield was the fastest player to 1,000 made treys, accomplishing that feat on March 1, 2021. He did it in his 350th career game when he played for the Sacramento Kings. They lost that game 127-126 to the Charlotte Hornets.

After averaging 15.6 points per game last season, the shooting guard is up to 16.9 points per game this season. He is making 3.5 three-pointers per game on 9.5 attempts and he averages 31.6 minutes per game. He is averaging 4.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists to go with one steal per contest.

Hield is in the top five in the league in made three-pointers this season. The seventh-year player is at number four on the list with 83 made treys. Ahead of him at number three is Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell with 89 made three-pointers, Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons in second with 93 made three-pointers, and leading the way this season is Curry with 117 made three-pointers.

The Pacers sport a 13-11 win/loss record this season and sit in fifth in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. They were in action at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last night, taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves (11-12), but the result of that game was unavailable up to press time. They will take to the court again tomorrow when they host the Washington Wizards (11-13) at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. That game starts at 7 p.m.

Cuba drops The Bahamas

The Bahamas plays Puerto Rico tonight; game gets underway at 7 p.m.

Cuban baseball player Yunior Ibarra takes a swing at a pitch during their game against The Bahamas during the 4th Annual COCABE Caribbean Baseball Cup at the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium Wednesday night. Cuba won the game, 9-3.

Tempers flared and dugouts emptied in the bottom of the fifth inning last night, and when the dust had cleared, The Bahamas lost  9-3 to Cuba as the 4th Annual COCABE (Caribbean Baseball Confederation) Caribbean Baseball Cup continued at the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium.

The Bahamas gave up six runs in that fifth inning and never recovered. There were three ejections, including Bahamian pitcher Carvin Dames and Team Manager Geron Sands. Cuban left fielder Hector Labrada was also ejected.

The host nation now drops to one win and two losses in the week-long tournament.

Cuba got the scoring going in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch that brought home one runner.

In the top of the fifth inning, designated hitter Dante Stuart got The Bahamas’ third hit of the night and second baseman Adari Grant got hit by pitch. It looked promising for awhile for The Bahamas, but Cuba closed the door in that inning and preserved a slim 1-0 lead.

Cuba scored two quick runs to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bahamas switched pitchers at that point, as Carvin Dames replaced Giovante Tomlins. Dames did not last long on the mound, as he was ejected from the game in that same inning when he shoved a Cuban player who was walking between the third base and home plate during a break in play.

The visitors went on to score four more runs in that inning to make it tough for the home team to come back in the game. Cuba led 7-0 after five innings.

In the top of the ninth inning with one out, pinch hitter Ellison Hanna, in his only at-bat of the night, became the first Bahamian to hit a home run in the new stadium. He sent Yunier Castillo’s ball deep to right field and over the fence. The Bahamas trailed 9-1 at that point.

The Bahamas seemed to have found some life late as Yeshua Saint sent the ball to right field and got a triple. Saint brought home pinch hitter Kashon Conliffe from second base and Stuart from first base. With two out, third baseman Keithron Moss could not bring home Hanna, as he grounded out to end the game. Cuba stopped the late rally, winning 9-3.

Stuart led The Bahamas’ batting as he went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Catcher Ural Forbes and left fielder Kristin Munroe both went 1-for-3.

Cuba had three batters with two hits as shortstop Vicente Mateo and designated hitter Yoelkia Guibert both went 2-for-4 and Jose Aviles went 2-for-3.

The winning pitcher was Cuba’s Manuel Reyes. Castillo got the save. Tomlins was the losing pitcher.

The top two teams from the week-long tournament will qualify to compete at next year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in San Salvador, El Salvador. If Cuba is among the top two, the top three will qualify for the CAC Games, as Cuba has previously qualified.

Earlier in the day, Puerto Rico denied the US Virgin Islands a run, shutting them out 6-0.

The defending champions Curacao is at the top of the table with a 2-1 win/loss record. Puerto Rico and Cuba are also 2-1. The Bahamas sits at 1-2 and the U.S. Virgin Islands is 1-3.

The Bahamas will return to action tonight when they take on Puerto Rico at 7 p.m. The early game will see Cuba taking on Curacao. That game will take place at 3 p.m.

All players in Bahamas Baseball Association (BBA) registered leagues 18 years and younger can attend tonight’s game free of charge. They must wear their league baseball jersey tops. Also, Miami Marlins’ infielder Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. will be in attendance from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an autograph opportunity.
