#Avard Moncur, the first Bahamian male athlete to win a World Championship title on the track, could only reflect on the good times that he shared with his mother, Ramona Moncur, after she passed away from COVID-19 yesterday.

#In Atlanta, Georgia, where he serves as a programme coordinator at Georgia Tech, Moncur said the news hit hard when he was told that his 60-year-old mother died in the wee hours at the South Beach Clinic where she was receiving treatment for her respiratory system.

#“She was the love of my life. She was everything that made me who I am,” said Moncur, who mourns along with his six brothers and one sister.

#“She was compassionate, sweet, generous and someone who was never afraid to support people. She was never judgemental, regardless of who they were. She always had a smile on her face. She was a fighter all of her life and even in going through this pandemic, she was fighting for her life.”

#Moncur was always around the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium when her tall, lanky son was a star for the SC McPherson Sharks and was a three-time gold medallist in the 400m from 1995-1997.

#When he left for Auburn University where he continued to excel as a member of the Tigers’ track team, winning the NCAA title back-to-back in 2000 and 2001, Moncur always boasted and bragged about her son’s accomplishments.

#Moncur, who made his international breakthrough as a senior athlete at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada in 1999, went on to secure a gold medal in the men’s 400 metres in 2001 at the World Championships and was also a member of the winning 4 x 400m relay team.

#The four-time Bahamian national champion who held the national record at 44.45 seconds until it was broken by Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown, also ran on the Bahamas’ 4 x 400m relay team that captured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in 2000.

#Moncur, who turns 42 on November 2, was also on three other medal winning teams at the World Championships in 2005 in Helsinki, Finland and 2007 in Osaka, Japan (silver) and 2003 in Paris-St Denis, France (bronze). He also won a Commonwealth Games’ bronze medal in 2002 in the 400m in Manchester, England.

#Additionally, Moncur also ran on the gold medal teams at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007 and the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in 2011.

#In all of his success, Moncur said his mother was right there supporting him, either on the sidelines or via a telephone call, which made it so hard for him when he found out that she had tested positive for the coronavirus.

#“The reality is my mother did everything to protect herself and a lot of times people want to do whatever they want to do and not take in consideration the people they come in contact with,” he said.

#“But there are a lot of people who may not have your best interest at heart and have some underlying disease that may be detrimental to them, so you can’t be selfish.

#“It’s not just about you, but the community as a whole. People just have to be more compassionate and considerate and not just think about yourself, but the community as a whole.”

#Calling this the most dramatic experience that he’s had to endure, Moncur said he’s now trying to take the necessary COVID-19 testing so that he can return home for the burial of his beloved mother in the next few weeks.

#FOLLOWING their initial meeting with the general body, Government Secondary Schools Sports Association president Varel Davis said they are eager to get the 2018/19 season started next month.

#Davis, who was elected during the last school year to her second consecutive term in office, said they will get started with volleyball on Monday, October 1. That will be followed by cross country on Saturday, October 6.

#Basketball will follow when the new year rolls in, then the GSSSA will concentrate on track and field, soccer, softball for girls and baseball for boys.

#“I am anticipating that this year will be bigger and better than last year,” Davis said.

#“We actually went out last year and we are hoping to make it even bigger and better this year.”

#One of the things that they didn’t accomplish in her last administration was the coaches-athletes banquet. “Hopefully we will be able to do it this year,” she said.

#This year, Davis said they will welcome some new coaches into the system and there are some changes with players switching around from one school to another.

#Among some of the changes of note are Daniel Pratt in from Grand Bahama and is at CV Bethel, Tiffany Wildgoose is in from North Andros and is at CC Sweeting, Tyrice Curry has moved from CR Walker to Anatol Rodgers, Christine Jenoure is in from North Abaco to Anatol Rodgers, Nikkita Taylor from Claridge Primary School is now at LW Young and Nigel Ingraham moved from RM Bailey to SC McPherson.

#There have been two surprising circumstances as both Chevvy Simmons at SC McPherson and Dereck Cummings at CC Sweeting have retired from teaching.

#“All of the coaches are ready for a competitive season,” Davis said.

#“Everyone is preparing their teams and so we’re looking forward to a competitive year across the board in all sports.

#“We are looking forward to see how the teams perform.”

#VAREL Davis has been re-elected to serve her third consecutive two-year term as president of the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association.

#But as they look forward to another competitive after-school sporting programme, Davis said the membership is not prepared to begin competition until all the monies owed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is paid to the officials from last year’s sporting events.

#During the elections on Monday, Davis was returned unopposed along with her entire slate of officers, including Kendal Campbell as first vice president, Shakira Farrington as second vice president, Fiona Tucker as secretary, Keisha Pratt as assistant secretary, Tia Rolle as treasurer and Nikita Knowles as assistant treasurer. “I was shocked that nobody opposed our administrative team,” Davis said. “I guess they felt that we did a great job. We are really appreciative of the support we received from the membership.”

#Davis, a physical education teacher at CH Reeves Junior High School, said they got a mandate from the membership during their annual general meeting and elections of officers that they will not be prepared to start their new season without being paid for the past season.

#She noted that they are looking forward to starting their 2019/20 season with volleyball on October 7 and with the destruction to some of the schools in Abaco, it’s already anticipated that there will be some athletes coming in to play on some of the high school teams here.

#“We know that the Ministry of Education was in the process of paying them. We are told that they have the money allocated for sports,” she pointed out. “But we were told that the paysheet closed in June and they didn’t make the payments on time.

#“So we have put everything on hold, even though we have a projected starting date for volleyball. If they get it before then, we will start on time. If the officials are not paid before then, we will have to put everything on hold.”

#Once they get started, Davis said they are anticipating another exciting season with at least one new member coming on board to join the coaching staff at CR Walker Secondary High.

#Justin Munroe, the former starting centre for the University of the Bahamas Mingoes men’s basketball team, is now a member of CR Walker’s staff and will be helping to continue the dynasty after they lost Ednol Rolle to UB as their full-time track and field coach.

#“Every year you want to improve and get better,” Davis said. “I know the coaches are preparing their teams for the upcoming season. Once the officials get paid, we will be ready to go. We wanted to introduce rings to the winners of our various competitions instead of the trophies. So that is something that we will continue to work towards. We are looking forward to an exciting year.”

#Following volleyball, the GSSSA will play basketball, track and field, soccer and softball for girls and baseball for boys through their calendar year that will conclude in June.

#WHILE she got a chance to celebrate her 44th birthday with family yesterday, Government Secondary Schools Sports Association’s president Varel Davis said she’s concerned about if and when they will be able to participate in sports this year.

#Jeff Lloyd, the Minister of Education, announced on Monday that schools will now open on October 5 with virtual classes being staged until they can find a way to revert back to the regular blended face-to-face classes on campus, due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

#“As we go virtual, it means we won’t have no kids at school, so we can’t have no type of practice or team sports until the virus is cleared up,” Davis said. “So it’s really going to affect school sports. I have no idea what will happen and even if we are going to have any type of sports this year.

#“So we are probably looking at 2021 to start our sporting calendar and even then we may only be able to do cross country and track and field. I don’t see us having any team sports right now. So it’s going to be very difficult for us to do anything.”

#With a month to month approach to when school will reopen, Davis said it doesn’t give them any indication of how they can form a plan of action for after school sports until the economy is fully opened and students are allowed back into the classrooms.

#Normally the school year for the GSSSA starts with volleyball, followed by basketball, track and field, soccer and softball and baseball (for girls and boys in the latter sport).

#But Davis said everything is up in the air and she’s not sure how her administration will be able to proceed with any sporting activities for the government schools.

#It’s anticipated that when school reopens, one of the basketball coaches, Harcourt McCoy, will be moving from Anatol Rodgers as the principal to CV Bethel in one of the shuffles at the administrators’ level.

#As for the physical education department within the schools, Davis said she is only aware of the retirement of Terrance King as a long-time physical education teacher and coach at HO Nash.

#However, she didn’t have any knowledge of who will be replacing him and whether or not there were any other movements within the remaining junior and senior high schools.

#“There’s nothing we can do until the ministry allows the students back to school,” Davis said. “I’ve had people calling and asking what we are going to do, but there’s nothing we can do. We can’t come up with a plan with the students in classes.”

#In the meantime, Davis said she’s just enjoying her birthday. Last year, she said she couldn’t celebrate her 43rd birthday because of the passing of Hurricane Dorian. This year, she said she was delighted that Prime Minister Hubert Minnis didn’t lock down the country amidst the coronavirus.

#“At least I could move a little bit,” said Davis, who enjoyed some time at the home of her mother, Ethialy Deveaux, where they feasted on some curry chicken, white rice, cole slaw and plantain with a birthday cake as dessert.

#After spending the past four years with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Jazz Chisholm is moving closer to home with the Miami Marlins in a deal before Wednesday’s trade deadline that will allow him to join fellow Bahamian right fielder Anfernee Seymour on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Double-A team.

#The Marlins traded rookie starting pitcher Zac Gallen to the Diamondbacks for Chisholm, the Diamondbacks’ top hitting prospect. Chisholm, a left-handed hitting shortstop, was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Diamondbacks’ top prospect and the No.59 overall prospect in MLB.

#“They did what they thought was a business decision for them, but I feel fine about it,” Chisholm told The Tribune. “I’m excited and disappointed at the same time. I’ve been with the Diamondbacks for the past four years, so that’s the sad part about leaving.

#“But now I get to start a new journey, being with some new guys and getting to know some new people. I can’t wait to see what will happen now that I am moving on to a new team.”

#The 21-year-old becomes the third-ranked prospect in a rebuilding Miami system behind No.26 overall prospect Sixto Sanchex and No.32 JJ Bleday.

#Chisholm is MLB.com’s No.8 shortstop prospect and surpasses No.10 Jose Devers as the top shortstop in the Miami pipeline.

#Chisholm signed as an international free agent in 2015, and is a career .253 hitter with 53 home runs over four minor-league seasons. He is hitting .204 with 18 home runs and 44 RBI in 89 games at the Double-A level this season.

#The Marlins expressed their delight in acquiring Chisholm’s services. “Chisholm posts impressive exit velocities from the left side of the plate with an explosive swing that has a natural loft. He showed in 2018 that he not only could tap into his plus raw power but also apply it across the entire field, as some of Chisholm’s longest home runs were hit to straightaway centre,” the Marlins wrote.

#“Chisholm’s power does come with swing-and-miss tendencies, so he’ll need to refine his aggressive approach as he develops. He’s an above-average runner who receives praise for his instincts on the basepaths.”

#Chisholm will now join Anfenee Seymour on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Double-A team in the Southern League.

#“I never got to play with another Bahamian, but a couple of the guys have and from what they have told me, it was just amazing having another Bahamian on the same team, so I can’t wait to see what happens in Jacksonville.”

#Gallen was quite surprised by the trade.

#“It’s a little shocking any time you get traded during the season,” Gallen said shortly after being informed of the trade. “Last time I was traded during the offseason so I was able to get my bearings. It’s a little bit quicker of a turnaround, but I’m excited.”

#Gallen, 23, came to the Marlins as part of the Marcell Ozuna trade in December 2017 and made a quick impression in his first seven MLB starts this year.

#Chisholm was named the Player of the Week on May 5 after he was assigned to the Jackson Generals from Visalia Rawhide on April 1. He was assigned to Visalia Rawhide from Kane County Cougars on July 19, 2018.

#During the 2018 season, he was named to the MLB.com Organisational All-Star game.

#Seymour, 24, was signed as an outfielder with the Marlins on July 17, 2014 out of American Heritage in Delray Beach, Florida. He too played in the Mid-Season All-Star in 2015.

#Chisholm and Seymour are among a list of about 20 players playing in the minor league pipeline, waiting for their breakthrough to add to the six Bahamians who played previously in the major league.

#They are Andre Rodgers, Tony Curry, Ed Armbrister, Wenty Ford, Will Culmer and Antoan Richardson.

#“My chances are looking even higher than before,” Chisholm summed up. “I’m just going to take a nap and sleep on everything. It’s been a long day, very rare day for me, so I just have to try and cope with everything. It’s just been a long day.”

#He thanked all the Bahamians who called and texted him after hearing about the trade.

The Majors: Jazz Plays For Marlins

#JAZZ Chisholm was the latest Bahamian to crack the Major League when he came out of the dugout to play for the Miami Marlins last night.

#The talented 22-year-old shortstop came in to complete the game for starter Miguel Rojas in a Marlins’ 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.

#While he didn’t get to bat, Chisholm made his first defensive play in the top of the ninth to help the Marlins preserve the win and improved their win-loss record to 16-15 on the season played without any fans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

#Chisholm follows Antoan Richardson, the last Bahamian to play in the Major League in 2014 with the New York Yankees in his second sting. He made his first appearance in 2011 with the Atlanta Braves.

#Andre Rodgers made the breakthrough for the Bahamas in 1957 with the New York Giants. As an infielder, Rodgers also played for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

#Outfielder Tony Curry played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cleveland Indians from 1960-66; outfielder Ed Armbrister played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1973-77, including the 1975 World Series when he was involved in a controversial bunt in game three; pitcher Wenty Ford played for the Braves in 1973 and outfielder/designated played Wilfred Culmer played for the Cleveland Indians in 1983.

#Chisholm was called up by the Marlins just before the game. He was traded from the Diamondbacks on July 31, 2019, but didn’t get to play Triple A ball as he was a high prospect, making their 40-man roster at the start of the season.

‘It Was Rewarding To Watch Our Kids Capitalise On Months Of Hard Work’

Okapi U-16 pose under the field goal with the FRFC U-16 and U-12 teams on the right.

#WITH the 8th Annual International Junior Rugby Festival approaching, the talented youth from Freeport Rugby Football Club (FRFC) travelled to Florida to gain some much-needed experience against quality competition in the inaugural Weston Rugby Challenge Cup.

#Hosted by Okapi Wanderers Rugby Football Club, the one-day tournament was a tremendous opportunity for Freeport’s Under-12, U-14 and U-16 teams to showcase their skills and build chemistry just weeks before the festival.

#“We really appreciated Okapi hosting this event for not only our players but all the participants,” said Stephen Sheehan, FRFC’s youth development officer.

#“It was rewarding to watch our kids capitalise on months of hard work and play in front of family and friends who made the trip,” he said.

#The Florida trip was the culmination of months of hard work and dedication from players, coaches and parents. The U-16 team put in extra work in the weeks leading up to the trip, including training with the senior team on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

#“The games showed me how dedicated you have to be to play rugby,” said Edward Walkin, who attends Jack Hayward High. “We as a team have to work together on improving our skills and try harder in practice and our future games.”

#For many of the youth rugby players, the trip represented the first chance to ever travel to the US.

#Beyond competing on the field, the players also built off-field chemistry that is invaluable in building the club culture. “The trip was, in its own way, a learning experience altogether,” said U-16 player Quinton Sands. “I learned what it is like to spend time with teammates and I gained some new friends.”

#Freeport’s youth teams, which included several standout female players, showed tremendous heart against Key Biscayne, Wellington and Okapi.

#Jake Edey and Andrew Lane stood out with brilliant tries for the U-12 team. Titus Lockhart and Michael Sanchez displayed their brute force and power in a highly entertaining U-16 match against Okapi.

#Though the trip ended without any hardware, the diligent work, fundraising, organising and training resulted in a resoundingly successful trip for Freeport RFC.
