The University of The Bahamas volleyball team prays after practicing on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at The David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie, Florida.

MIAMI, Florida – The University of The Bahamas women’s volleyball team practiced Thursday ahead of a series of matches this weekend in the South Florida area.

The team members practiced at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie, Florida as they get ready for the first ever international tour for the UB volleyball program.

Head Coach Raymond Wilson said he feels the team is ready for the test of international competition.

“I expect this group of ladies to pass the exam they are about to take,” he said. “I’ve been working with them for a while now – some of them through the pandemic. A handful of them are freshmen just coming in for the first time and they have put in a lot of hard work; so, now they are the stage where we are not at the theory part any more we are at the practical.

“I expect them to do well and hopefully this will catapult them to the next level.”

The Mingoes play Atlantis University 6 p.m. today and 1 p.m. on Saturday at Miami Christian School gym in Miami, Florida.

University of The Bahamas midfielder Ronalo dribbles past two BearsFC players en route to scoring one of his four goals against BearsFC, in Bahamas Football Association action on October 16, 2022 at The Roscow R.L. Davies field. The Mingoes won 5-1.

The University of The Bahamas men’s soccer team expected the biggest match of the season so far against Bears FC. It turned out like a normal day at the office for The Mingoes.

The UB Mingoes took out a depleted Bears side 5-1 in Bahamas Football Association (BFA) Men’s Senior League action this past Sunday October 16 at the Roscow A.L. Davies pitch to take sole possession of first place in the league.

Mingoes midfielder Ronaldo Green again scored a hat trick plus one in the match in a very physically aggressive match. He scored in the 22nd, 57th, 73rd and 89th minutes of the match.

The Bears’ lone goal came in the 56th minute. That goal celebration was short-lived as Green responded in less than one minute later.

The Bears’ top player was out of commission because of a red card penalty in a previous match.

O’Bryan Hinds scored first for the Mingoes on a brilliant shot in the 15th minute to start things off for The Mingoes. It was his second goal for the team and the season.

Green said the match was not up to what the team expected but they got the job done.

“It was a brilliant win for us,” Green said. “The Bears didn’t have a few of their players due to a red card but we came out and got the job done for UB today.”

Green added that the team was focused and hope to keep the momentum for the rest of the season.

“We kept the ball moving and as a team we learned from the mistakes that we had from the past few games,” he said. “We are learning and we’re going to keep improving.”

The Mingoes now have sole possession of the top spot in the BFA men’s league with a perfect 4-0 record.

Pivotal game three set for tonight

The Cyber Tech Blue Marlins rained on the defending champions, the C&S Hitmen parade with a 16-0 shut out in game two of the New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) men’s championship on Tuesday night.

That best-of-five series is now tied at 1-1. The game was played at Bankers Field at Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. The Hitmen won the first game 3-1 this past Saturday.

Picking up the winning pitcher tab was the Blue Marlins’ Thomas Davis. He was locked in and had 15 strikeouts and only gave up one hit as he pitched all seven innings.

“The game itself coming from me on the mound, was a good game. I had a good game. The game plan was to execute on my pitches and take one batter at a time. On the offensive side, we wanted to be more patient in the box and be more consistent with the bat and work the pitcher,” Davis said.

The Blue Marlins offensive game plan worked as they were patient in scoring 16 runs on the Hitmen – the most they scored on them all season. Their most productive inning came in the fourth where they poured in seven runs to take a 12-0 lead and was in total control of the game.

The Blue Marlins’ catcher Garfield Bethel got the scoreboard ticking for the Blue Marlins with a home run over centerfield at the bottom of the first inning. He also brought home Angelo Watson for two runs batted in (RBI). It put the Blue Marlins up 2-0 in the first inning.

After an empty second inning, the Blue Marlins scored three runs in the third inning. Third baseman Eugene Pratt secured the RBI with a double. Second baseman Stephen Russell had a sacrifice fly that bought home Bethel and Pratt to put the Blue Marlins up 5-0 as their batters showed no fear of the Hitmen pitcher, Alcott Forbes.

Forbes who did not pitch on Saturday, is known for his ability to control the game and pitches but on Tuesday night he was off. Fortunately for the Hitmen, it was not later in the series.

The final three innings for the Blue Marlins saw them scoring one of more runs.

Davis had five innings where he had two or more strikeouts and was brilliant at the top of the seventh inning with three consecutive strikeouts.

The third game is set for tonight after the ladies championship, Davis is unsure who the coach will play from their bullpen but he is looking to stay ready.

“I want to stay consistent. That is the main thing I want to do. I want to give the guys a chance on the defensive end. I am looking forward to going on the mound again but it is still up to the coach,” Davis said.

In the ladies championship best-of-five series, the Sunshine Auto Wildcats will look to lift the title for a fourth consecutive time tonight as they have a 2-0 series lead over the RAB Operators. That game gets underway at 7 o’clock.

 Lashann Higgs.

Bahamian professional basketball players, Lashann Higgs, Tavario Miller and Willis Mackey Jr. were in action for their respective teams this past weekend as the overseas season is still early.

Higgs moved back to Spain to play in the Liga Femina Endesa. This time it was for Honzo Global Jairis where she is off to a decent start. She was in action on Sunday for them when they played her former team Bembibre PDM. Higgs erupted for a season-high 19 points to ensure that Jairis came away with an 85-73 victory.

The Harbour Island native played a season high 31 minutes and finished 6-for-12 from the field that included three triples. She made four of her five free-throws and finished with five assists and two rebounds to go with one steal.

In her previous contests, the third-year pro-guard scored nine and four points. She is averaging 10.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game as she gets acclimated to her new team.

Jairis now sports a 2-1 win/loss record on the season with the win and sits in fifth place in the standings.

Miller is playing for Shizuoka Veltex in the Japan B3 League. They played Gifu Swoops back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday. They convincingly won both games. They won the first matchup 98-75 and then came away with an 80-68 victory on Sunday.

The Long Island native was more impressive in Sunday’s victory when he notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He was hot from the field going 6-for-9 and also missed one of his five free-throw shots. He got one steal in the game.

The season is young, but the Bahamian is averaging 13.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in six contests this season. He is also showing that he has swift hands as he is averaging two steals per game.

It is a fierce battle for Shizuoka at the top of the league as they sport a 5-1 record with three other teams. They sit in fifth position.

Shizuoka returns to action this coming Saturday and Sunday when they head on the road to take on Tokyo Hachioji Trains.

Mackey just completed his second game for his new team, CTC Lyon in the NM1 League in France. They were in action on Friday and got the 87-84 away win against AS Kaysersberg to move to 2-3 on the season. They sit in 10th position in Group B.

The Grand Bahama native came away with 11 points in 31 minutes on the floor as he went 5-for-11 from the field to come away with two rebounds and two assists. He had a game-high three steals and had the only block for his team.

In his first game for the French club, Mackey finished with 11 points but had six rebounds and two steals in a 75-61 loss against Andrezieux earlier that week.

Mackey and Lyon have a home game tomorrow against 4-1 Rouen Metropole Basket.

St. Cecilia’s School on the attack against St. Thomas More School.

The 2022 Bahamas Catholic Board of Education (CBE) primary school basketball season kicked off on Friday, October 14 at Loyola Hall on Gladstone Road. The participating schools included the St. Cecilia’s School Strikers, Sts. Francis & Joseph School Shockers, Xavier’s Lower School Giants and St. Thomas More School Sparks.

In the boys division, the Strikers defeated the Sparks 10-5. The Shockers bested the Giants with a scoreline of 15-5. In the girls division, the Shockers defeated the Sparks 7-1. Strikers beat the Giants 15-2.

For almost two years, as a result of the pandemic, all CBE sports tournaments and relative events were cancelled. Sports is an important part of catholic school education and aligns with CBE’s mission of development of the whole person. It not only promotes health and well-being, but also fosters school spirit and the development of skills and talents.

“You will notice scores are low, but you have to remember that as a result of the pandemic, these children have never had the opportunity to play basketball competitively. This is their first time participating in a tournament and playing in front of a crowd,” said N’Komo Ferguson, coach at St. Cecilia’s School.

He continued, “We are happy to be able to revive the athletic programs in our schools as sports is not just about competition but essential in fostering a love of sports and all the other benefits sports offers to young persons. We are certain that with more exposure, the students will become more confident playing in the tournament.”

Sts. Francis & Joseph School coach Ricardo Freemantle said sports unites a nation.

“Being able to participate in team sports yet again is welcomed. The physical, emotional and social are areas that the kids were lacking throughout the pandemic, therefore it is remarkable and welcoming to be back on the court. In terms of our boys’ and girls’ win on Friday, it feels good to get back in that winning mentality,” Freemantle said.

The next set of games on the basketball schedule will take place today. Sts. Francis & Joseph will take on St. Cecilia’s and the Xavier’s College will face St. Thomas More. All games will take place at Loyola Hall again.

King, Bluejays projected no.1 in Big East preseason poll

#FREDRICK King and the Creighton Bluejays were selected to finish number one overall in the Big East when the conference announced its preseason poll.

#The conference hosted media day yesterday at Madison Square Garden and the Bluejays were selected to finish first by Big East coaches for the first time in programme history.

#The Bluejays collected eight first-place votes and earned 98 points in the poll.

#The Blue Jays finished last season 23-12, fourth place in the Big East Conference regular-season standings, and runner-up in the league tournament.

#After receiving an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament, they defeated San Diego State in the first round before they lost in the second round to eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks. King joins a roster that returns three double figure scorers from last season, several players that received all-conference honours and a highly touted team.

#“Certainly from a depth standpoint we have experience and we have a lot of versatility,” McDermott said at Tuesday’s BIG EAST Media Day at Madison Square Garden.

#“We have a starting five that can do a lot of things. We can be small and quick or we can be big and physical. We just have to make sure our defence is elite like it was last year and then hopefully in time our offence will catch up.”

#Creighton will open its preseason on October 30 against Drury and the regular season on November 7 against St Thomas.

#“Fredrick is a versatile and an athletic front line player,” McDermott said at the time of King’s signing.

#“Having played at NBA Academy Latin America, he has been coached and trained at a high level. His motor and competitive spirit will allow for an immediate impact on our programme.”

#King, a 6’10” frontcourt player out of the NBA Academy (Latin America), decided on the Blue Jays over the BYU Cougars, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Utah Utes..

#King said he hopes to learn from and lend support to Bluejays starting centre and Big East Defensive Player of the Year – the 7’1” Ryan Kalkbrenner.

#“(Kalkbrenner) is a great player. He’s bigger than everybody else,” King said.

#“I’ll come in after Kalkbrenner,” King said. “I’ll be able to help inside while also working on multiple skills.”

Shamar Burrows leads Tigers in final year

SHAMAR BURROWS

#By RENALDO DORSETT

#Tribune Sports Reporter

#rdorsett@tribunemedia.net

#SHAMAR Burrows enters his final year of eligibility with the Dalhousie Tigers and looks to step into a leadership role as the programme pursues its fourth consecutive Atlantic University Sport title.

#The fifth year guard has led the Tigers in scoring in five preseason games and posted three double doubles as the Tigers prepare for the 2022-23 campaign.

#Dalhousie began their preseason in the RBC Classic, hosted by the Brock Badgers. After a 68-48 loss to Ottawa in the opener, Burrows finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a 71-64 win over Brock and concluded with a 73-70 win over Manitoba.

#At the Concordia Classic, the Tigers finished 2-1 and Burrows posted double doubles in consecutive games. He finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds in a 72-60 win over Concordia and followed with 26 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in a 79-69 loss to Toronto Metropolitan.

#The Tigers moved on to the Naismith Classic hosted by the Waterloo Warriors. Burrows had 13 points and four assists in an 85-79 win over the hosts, 19 points and seven rebounds in a 59-57 win over Windsor, and eight points and five assists in a 74-62 loss to his former team, Laurier.

#The Tigers conclude the preseason on October 22 against Laurentian. They open the regular season the following weekend (October 28-29) against the UNB Red Bombers.

#The Tigers concluded their 2021-22 season with a fifth-place finish overall at the U Sports Men’s Basketball Final 8.

#In three Final Eight games, he averaged 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

#On the season, Burrows was named a second team AUS All-Star. He finished third in scoring for Dalhousie, averaging 14.8 points per game shooting 73 percent. He also led the Tigers in rebounding with 6.7 boards per game.

#In their 2020-21 Final Eight appearance, the Tigers finished as the second-ranked team in all of Canadian collegiate basketball.

#They finished with the silver medal at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships, the best finish in programme history. For the tournament, Burrows averaged 12.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game on 49 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from three-point range.

#A fifth year guard, Burrows’ numbers have progressed across the board since he transferred to the Tigers programme in 2018.

#In his first season he averaged just 3.3 points in 19 appearances off the bench and in year two progressed to 8.8 points and four rebounds per game in 20 appearances with six starts.

#Following the COVID-19 cancelled 2020 season, Burrows averaged career highs last season with 14.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

#Off the court, Burrows has excelled in the classroom and achieved an Athletic Financial Award (AFA), which he said allowed him freedom and financial stability.

#Burrows is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.

#“It was a big step for me joining a ranked team and having expectations on me in the classroom,” he told Dalhousie Sports.

#In 2019-2020, was named an Academic All-Canadian. That same year he won his second Athletic Financial Award and granted a full scholarship. “I thought I had a good chance but nothing is guaranteed. When much is given, much is expected of you. I had to work for it,” Burrows said.

#“Without the AFA, I’d probably be working a lot of jobs to help support myself. The AFA gives me a lot more freedom and takes a lot of burden off me and my parents’ shoulders.”

#Tribune Sports Reporter

#rdorsett@tribunemedia.net

#Chavano “Buddy” Hield opened his 2022-23 campaign with a double double but the Indiana Pacers struggled at home en route to their first loss of the season.

#Hield finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Pacers’ 114-107 loss to the Washington Wizards last night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

#He shot 6-16 from the field, 4-11 from three-point range and added three assists in 31 minutes.

#Hield’s rebound and three-point makes were both team leads. He was just one of four Pacers players to reach double figures along with Tyrese Haliburton (26), Jalen Smith (16), and rookie guard Benedict Mathurin (19).

#The Pacers never got closer than five points in the second half — until Mathurin’s basket with 31.2 seconds left made it 110-107. But he missed the ensuing free throw and Washington closed it out at the line.

#Hield got out to a quick start from beyond the arc, after finishing second in the league last season with 262 made three-point field goals.

#Indiana will look for their first win with a matchup against the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

#During training camp, Hield credited head coach Rick Carlisle’s free flowing offence for his improved efficiency.

#Hield’s 4.8 assists per game with the Pacers was an increase from 1.9 per game with the Kings.

#“Rick does a good job just letting me be myself and just letting me play freely and do random things but in accordance with his offence and control in the system. As a player, you want to be free and be myself but in the structure of his offence,” he said. “Rick’s offence allowed me to expand a little bit more. I was able to do more with the ball, be creative and play freely.”

#One of only two players on the team aged 29 or older, Hield said the development of the Pacers’ youth movement will be a joy to watch.

#“The young atmosphere keeps you healthy. Running around with young guys, I love the competitive spirit they bring everyday, it’s a grind it’s a challenge everyday,” he said. “Everybody’s voice is needed. We just have to learn quickly, adapt, and when training camp comes get after it. We brought in a group of guys that are a great fit, have great personalities, when you understand and likes each other, it’s easier to have a great vibes.”

#The early veteran extension deadline passed on October 17 without Hield and Pacers reaching an agreement to extend his current contract.

#Hield has been the subject of trade rumours for much of the offseason and had the sides agreed to an extension, he would have been ineligible to be traded for at least six months if the deal included a more than five percent raise. Hield will now be ineligible for an extension until next offseason.
