The Bahamas senior men’s national soccer team have one more game remaining, and they are on the brink of being relegated to League C in the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Nations League.
The Bahamas currently sits at the bottom of League B, Group D in fourth position with one point. Mathematically, there is still hope for The Bahamas, as the team has one more game remaining.
That remaining game is against Guyana, which has already won the group with 15 points after a 5-0 win/loss record. A new date has not been set yet. The two teams were set to play each other last weekend, but that game was postponed on Saturday and Sunday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It was postponed on Saturday due to adverse weather, and on Sunday due to local officials suspending public and private activities because of the effects of the adverse weather on Saturday.
Jean said whenever that game takes place, his team just needs to be ready to go out there and play.
“It does not matter if these players play professional or no. At the end of the day, it is 11 players against 11 players on the field, and we must go out there and do our job to the best of our ability,” Jean said.
The Bahamas will have to win by two goals to overtake third place Antigua and Barbuda, with four points and a 1-4-1 win/loss/draw record. The Bahamas has a 0-4-1 record. One of the team leaders and vocal players on the team, Marcel Joseph, said the team must seize this opportunity.
“After hearing the score for the Guyana-Antigua and Barbuda game, it is a bit of a relief,” Joseph said. “We don’t know when that game will be played, but if given the opportunity with one more game, knowing that we have something to play for now is more motivation. We must rally the boys and let them know that we are alive, and it is still possible. We have to go out and fight for good results.”
The last matchup saw The Bahamas falling 6-1 to Puerto Rico on Tuesday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Joseph scored the lone goal for The Bahamas. Puerto Rico finished second in the group with a 4-2 record and with 12 points to remain in the League B.
