#THE CH Reeves Raptors and CR Walker Knights won the junior and senior division titles at the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) Cross Country Championships.

#The one-day long distance meet was hosted in front of the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium on Saturday and saw competition between hundreds of athletes across the GSSSA senior and junior age groups.

#Varel Davis, president of the GSSSA, said the level of competition on display over the weekend was impressive.

#“I was very impressed with the level of competition this morning [Saturday] at our GSSSA cross country meet. Each year the competition is getting better and better. Hats off to all the hard working coaches who train and develop their athletes,” Davis said.

#The Knights claimed the overall senior division bragging rights for the second straight year on Saturday.

#The senior school won two out of four division titles, including the under-20 (U20) girls and under-17 (U17) boys divisions.

#Anatol Rodgers High School earned the division title for the U20 boys and the CV Bethel Stingrays won the U17 girls division title.

#The Stingrays’ Marquell Newbold finished way ahead of the pack with a time of 13:38.18 in the U20 girls event.

#Raynia Russell, who competes in multiple disciplines for the Knights, came in second with 14:12.20.

#Tarell McPhee, of Government Senior High School, finished third among competitors. The 12th grader, who specialises in sprints and hurdle events, was happy to get a win at the cross country meet another year.

#“The race was kind of tough for me at the beginning. I went out kind of fast, I feel like I went out too fast and I just had to maintain my pace, run smart up and coming down the hill and finish strong,” Newbold said. She added that she put extra pressure on herself because she was trying to beat her time from last year’s cross country meet of 13:27. Although she came up short, the now 17-year-old said the meet served as a great help for conditioning for the 400m and 400m hurdle events.

#The RM Bailey Pacers saw Lataji Moxey place first with a time of 9:57.08 in the U20 boys event. Fabian Saintil, of Doris Johnson Senior High School, was right behind with 9:57.78. Raywind Winder, who recently competed at the William “Knucklehead” Johnson Cross Country meet, grabbed the third podium spot for the Mystic Marlins with 10:45.83.

#“It was a little hard I pushed through, I am a little unfit with a little back problems but I got through it. At the end of the day I am very happy to come out with the win. I showed out for my school,” Moxey said.

#For the U17 boys event, Shanton St Germaine ran through the finish line first at 10:15.79 for the Stingrays. Vincent Alerte, of Anatol Rodgers, picked up second place after he stopped the clock at 10:16.44. The Knights’ Gabriel Johnson collected third place in 10:36.78.

#Bernichia Nelson, of the Pacers, emerged victorious on Saturday with a time of 12:27.85. Theresa Edouard placed second and Stacy Hummes of the CI Gibson Rattlers wrapped up third with 15:11.99.

#For the juniors, the Raptors won three out of four divisions to hoist the trophy. They won the under-13 (U13) boys and girls divisions, and the under-15 (U15) girls division. DW Davis Junior High School came away with the final division title to win the U15 boys group.

#Davis, who also serves as the Raptors head coach, was happy about their performance.

#“CH Reeves’ cross country team has been practicing everyday since September. I am so proud of these kids. Their dedication and willingness to practice and train hard everyday is unbelievable,

#“I am very happy and would like to say a special thanks to Mr Thurman Johnson, one of our coaches as well. We put a lot of time in our practices and with that comes great results,” she said.

#The DW Davis Royals’ Melvens Simeon concluded the U15 boys event in 6:56.45. The Raptors’ Javon Cherime capped off with 7:03.34 for second and Deontay Rolle, of LW Young, got third place for the Golden Eagles.

#Lendrea Davis, of the Raptors, won the U15 girls event in 8:19.92. Dina Risque, of the AF Adderley Tigers, notched 8:48.12 and Kevenna Bain got the third spot for the Raptors as well.

#Travon Moncur led the group of competitors in the U13 boys event. He came first for CH Reeves with 7:04.88. The second and third positions went to Kaiden Newbold and Jaynez Pratt of the Golden Eagles. The duo earned times of 7:23.27 and 7:56.34 respectively.

#The Royals’ Haleel Munnings got the victory for the U13 girls. She came through the finish line at 8:09.09. Esmaella Pauleon, of CH Reeves, trailed behind in 8:19.08. Meanwhile, her fellow schoolmate, Tirara Wallace, took home third in 8:38.66.

NPBA regular season is back ‘with a bang’

#THE New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) regular season returned with a bang and so did the Commonwealth Bank Giants at the Kendal G L Isaacs Gymnasium on Saturday night.

#Along with pregame performances by Dillon “D-MAC” McKenzie and Nishie LS, halftime entertainment from Julien Believe and the Saxons Superstars dancers, the crowd witnessed the defending champions Giants defeat the Discount Distributors Liquors Rockets 104-89.

#The NPBA season opener was a finals rematch between the top division one teams and, from the opening tip to the final buzzer, it was all Giants.

#Perry Thompson Jr, head coach of the CB Giants, was thrilled about the statement win and talked about how his team got it done.

#“It was a great first half, third quarter lacked a lot, it was a lot of fouling, sloppy play, and the pace was slowing down a bit so we got out of the groove but they were able to get back into it in the fourth and finish up strong to come out with the W,” Thompson said.

#Last season’s Giants team struggled with sluggish starts, however, on Saturday night the team got off to a great start in their opening game.

#The team ran out to a 12-8 lead to begin the game which blossomed to a 10-point lead (26-16) at the end of the first period. The team ramped up the intensity in the following quarter and led by 18 (42-24) in its opening minutes.

#After outscoring the Rockets 30-23 in the second quarter, the Giants were in charge with 56-39 on the scoreboard to head into the halftime break.

#Jackson Jacob, the Giants’ leading scorer, gave the Rockets defence problems all game long.

#Jacob notched a game-high 26 points and scored 17 of his total points in the first half.

#Additionally, he complemented his scoring output with a trio of rebounds, assists and steals. His offensive prowess helped the national champions to earn their biggest lead of the game, 22, in the second period of play. Coach Thompson gave credit to one of the team’s longest members for his play style and leadership abilities. “He is one of the pillars of this team and a veteran. He does whatever we ask, last year he came off the bench this year we need him in the starting role. He gives us a spark. We need him as a leader and that’s what he has come out here and done,” the coach said.

#As for last year’s runners-up, the Rockets showed signs of life in the third quarter which they closed out down by 12 and outscored the Giants 21-16. This year’s Rockets team features some new additions including Kemsey Sylvestre from the Leno Regulators and Lerecus Armbrister from the CB Giants. The Rockets’ Livingston Munnings led the way with 22 points, grabbed five boards and stole the ball twice. Meanwhile, Sylvestre was second in the team’s scoring in his Rockets debut with 16 points, 5 rebounds and three steals.

#The Rockets drew close on the scoreboard in the final period but it was too late against the Giants. The latter collected 35 points from turnovers compared to 16 from their opponents. They edged out the Rockets by ten points in the paint with 44 to 34. The defending champions also dominated in the fastbreak with 27 to 12.

#In their last four meetings, including last season’s finals, the Giants have bested the Rockets. With the season now underway, coach Thompson is ready for what teams have in store for the defending champions.

#“We always have a target on our backs whether we win or not just the name alone brings a lot of pressure. Every year the goal is to win, we work hard and it shows when we get out there on the court,” he said.

#The NPBA regular season games will continue today with the Heat Waves facing the Island Development Construction Rebels in division two. The Brandon Deli Kings compete against the Island Development Rebels in division one at 8:30pm.

#THE LW Young Golden Eagles joined the three crowned champions after knocking off the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves junior boys in game three of the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) volleyball championships at the Kendal GL Isaacs Gymnasium on Friday.

#The second-seeded Golden Eagles versus the fourth-seeded Timberwolves was the final remaining game in the best-of-three championships, and was the only match to go beyond two games. Following their 2-1 series victory over the Timberwolves, the Golden Eagles are champions along with the HO Nash Lions junior girls, CV Bethel Stingrays senior girls and Timberwolves senior boys.

#Golden Eagles vs Timberwolves (2-1)

#On Thursday night when three combined junior and senior teams celebrated their championship wins, the Golden Eagles kept their championship window open.

#The second-seeded regular season squad managed to tie the series 1-1 on Thursday following a win in straight sets and rode that momentum to an identical result on Friday evening. With the GSSSA junior boys’ title up for grabs, both teams brought the intensity early in the initial set.

#The score was locked at six apiece then the Timberwolves advanced by one point (7-6). The lower seeded Timberwolves got the advantage by three points to lead 9-6 on the determined Golden Eagles.

#As the match winded down, the Golden Eagles took over 17-15 and then both junior teams scored on consecutive plays, changing the score to 19-17. The newly-crowned champions advanced by four points on the scoreboard (22-18) and eventually won set one 25-22.

#With just one set between the Golden Eagles and the championship hardware, the junior boys came out strong in the final set. They opened the final match 3-0 which then changed to 8-4 as the Timberwolves got back into the bout. The LW Young team put their feet on the gas pedal and charged out to a 13-9 score. Despite the lead, the Timberwolves were unphased and evened the score at 14.

#Following a few ties, the Golden Eagles proved why they were the second best team in the division and went up by six points (22-16). Although the Timberwolves fought their way back to make the score 24-20, the Golden Eagles scored the final point to spoil their chances of an upset and brought home the title to the nest.

#The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Kevense Vilme.

#Rashad Brice, head coach of the Golden Eagles, was overwhelmed with excitement as he talked about the junior boys’ championship win.

#“We just did what we needed to do. Our boys came out a bit flat in game one, we came back in game two, [and] game three we did what we do best, win and soar for the sky,” Brice said.

#He acknowledged that the Timberwolves came out with a resilient energy but his team weathered the storm.

#“We knew that they were gonna come out with a strong fight so we just decided to resist it, after they broke that we said we got them and never let them go after that,” the head coach continued.

#He gave special thanks to Aquapure, Richard Morton and all of their other supporters during the GSSSA volleyball season.

#The championships wrapped up after three days with the Stingrays taking down the Magic 2-0 for the senior girls’ title.

#The Timberwolves senior boys swept the defending champions CI Gibson Rattlers in two games to hoist their trophies.

#For the juniors, the Lions junior girls doubled up on championships after winning the title for the second year in a row following a 2-0 sweep against the Golden Eagles.

#Next up for the GSSSA will be basketball for the senior and junior divisions scheduled for November 20.

Mingoes hold on for BFA season-opening win

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s soccer team had to fight to pull off a win to open the team’s season in the Bahamas Football Association. The Mingoes won 3-2 over United FC on Sunday at the Roscow A. L. Davies Field to open the season.

The Mingoes came out strong in the first half with a swarming defensive attack to hold United from scoring.

Out of the break the scoring started for both teams.

Midfielder Peter Julmis entered the match in the 61st minute as the Mingoes were taking a corner kick. Julmis, on his first touch of the match, headed the ball into the net to put the Mingoes up 1-0.

United, though, responded quickly by scoring in the 70th and 73rd minute to go up 2-1 on The Mingoes.

In the 75th minute, midfielder Ronaldo Green was on a charge to the goal and in the box and he suffered a hard tackle, earning a penalty kick. He connected easily to even the match at 2-2.

Stanley Grand Pierre was determined to score after four shots on goal earlier in the match. He connected in the 77th minute after some spectacular footwork to give the Mingoes the go-ahead goal.

The Mingoes took a hard defensive stand to hold on for the 3-2 win to open their BFA campaign.

“We are missing quite a few players due to some circumstance and we had to go out there and play with what we have,” Green said. “Some players had injuries so we really had to fight to get the win. It was a touch game but it was key for us to get the win and start the season with a win.”

Mingoes keeper Antonio Beckford had seven saves on the night for the side.

The Mingoes next play IM Bears at 5:30 p.m. November 19th at RALD.

C.V. Bethel. Senior High School Stingrays, GSSSA senior girls volleyball champions.

H.O. Nash Junior High School Lions, GSSSA junior girls volleyball champions.

There were three teams that avoided going to a game three in their best-of-three volleyball championship series in the Government Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA) last night at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium. Winning titles were the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves in the senior boys, the C.V. Bethel Stingrays in the senior girls and the H.O Nash Lions in the junior boys divisions.

The only division that is going to a third game is the junior boys division. The senior boys saw a sweep completed by the Timberwolves over the C.I. Gibson Rattlers. The Stingrays took home the senior girls title after fighting off a pesky Government High Magic. Earlier in the afternoon, the H.O Nash Lions took home the junior girls title over the L.W. Young Lady Golden Eagles

Senior boys

Timberwolves 2, Rattlers 1

The Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves had to dig deep to get the 2-1 win after the Rattlers won the first set and was on the verge of winning the second set.

“I knew they were coming to fight,” Timberwolves Head Coach Theodore Hanna said. “I told my team that if the Rattlers fight and back us in the corner, we have to fight back. It feels great to be the champion.”

After the Rattlers won the first set 25-20, the Timberwolves never put their head down in the second set. The second set saw the Rattlers go up 23-19 and poised to force a game three to be played today. That was when Hanna’s players decided they don’t want to play today and wanted to end it last night. The Timberwolves came back and scored seven unanswered points to win the set 25-23 to force a third set.

The third set saw the Timberwolves being dominant and the Rattlers making mental errors. After the score was tied at four points, the Timberwolves went up 5-4 and never looked back as they won the set 15-5 to win the match and the senior boys division.

The Most Valuable Player was the Timberwolves’ Jaron Francis. He also sails and was due to be in Exuma today for the Bahamas Junior Sunfish Nationals, set for tomorrow and Saturday in George Town, Exuma. He put the team on his back and ended the series last night.

Senior girls

Stingrays 2, Magic 0

The Stingrays swept the Magic but the game was a very intense one, as the Magic was trying to force a game three.https://ce985df3d83094e8a07bcc1e134b99ea.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

It was a battle in the first set, as the score was close until it was tied at 15 points. The Stingrays went up 19-17 before ending the set on 6-0 to win 25-17.

The second set saw the Stingrays go up 9-5, but the Magic took a 20-18 lead and appeared to be on the way to force a third set. The Stingrays had other plans and took a 24-21lead. Backed into a corner, the Magic tied the game at 24-24 as the teams needed a two-point advantage to get the win.

The Magic went up 25-24 but the Stingrays tied it at 25 points apiece. The Magic tied it at 26 points before the Stingrays won the next two points and won the match.

“I am very excited for these girls,” Shantel Rolle, head coach for the Stingrays said. “We got great support from the principal. I expected a tough fight. I told my girls to stay focused even when the score was tied and they hustled.”

The Stingrays Tasha Johnson was the MVP in that division.

Junior boys

Golden Eagles 2, Timberwolves 0

The Golden Eagles dropped both sets in game one, but they put that in the past and came into the game and made the series competitive. The Timberwolves went up 19-14 before the Golden Eagles stormed back and tied the set at 24 points. After they were tied at 25 points, the Golden Eagles scored two straight points to end the set at 27-25.

The ability to win their first set of the series gave the Golden Eagles a confidence boost as they won the second set 25-13.

Game three is set for today.

Junior girls

Lions 2, Lady Golden Eagles 0

There was no doubt that the Lions was on a mission to end the series, as they went up 15-4 in the first set before winning 25-15. They returned in the second set and got a little push back from the Lady Golden Eagles early on. After a 6-3 lead Lions lead, they jumped to a 13-6 lead. The scoreline then saw them leading 20-15. In the end the Lions won 25-18 to lift the trophy.https://ce985df3d83094e8a07bcc1e134b99ea.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

The Lions’ Emily Rolle was the MVP.

The Golden Eagles won that best-of-three series 2-1.

The Golden Eagles won that match in two straight sets as they played a very focused game. They won the first set 25-23 and came back and won the second set 25-20. Head coach for the Golden Eagles, Rashad Brice thanked God for the victory.

“It was a sweet victory. We came out flat in the first match, but we handled our business in game two and we executed well in game three and did what we do best and that is win,” Brice said.Kwan on Gold Glove, moreKwan on Gold Glove, morecloseNextStay

The first set saw the Golden Eagles jumping out to an 11-6 lead. As expected, the Timberwolves made a run and cut into that deficit, as the Golden Eagles led 14-13. That lead jumped to 21-17 with the Golden Eagles taking their play to another level and eventually getting the 25-22 win.

Brice was not surprised that the Timberwolves put up a fight in the first set.

The second set saw the Golden Eagles jumping out to a 12-7 lead but like the first set, the Timberwolves pushed back and tied the game at 15 points. The Golden Eagles went on a run and went up 22-16, which was the difference in the set. The Timberwolves did not get any closer, as the Golden Eagles completed the back door sweep and got the 25-20 victory.

“We settled down and got our plays and looks,” Brice said. “We were able to find open holes on the court. I am proud of my players. We were supposed to be in the championships last year, but I wanted to send my seniors off on a good note this year because they deserve to be victors.”

Winning the Most Valuable Player was the Golden Eagles’ Kevense Vilme.

The Golden Eagles’ title comes a day after the three other division champions were crowned. The senior boys division was won by the Timberwolves, and the C.V. Bethel Stingrays secured the senior girls title. The H.O. Nash Lions walked away as champions in the junior girls division.

The volleyball season has wrapped up and it’s time for the highlight of the GSSSA sports calendar – basketball. That season gets underway on Monday, November 20.

“I am not a distance runner,” Newbold said. “It was a tough race for me at the beginning, as I went out too fast. I had to maintain my pace, run smart up the hill and finish strong.”

The 12th grader, who said that the cross-country races were good for her conditioning, was happy to get the under-20 girls title.

The Commonwealth Giants’ guard Jackson Jacob attempts a free-throw to finish with a game high 26 points in a 104-89 victory over the Discount Distributors Rockets, in New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) action on Saturday.

The defending champions in the New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) Division I, the Commonwealth Bank Giants, showed no rust on Saturday night as they blew past last season’s runners-up the Discount Distributors Rockets 104-89, on opening night at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium .

Leading the way for the Giants was their longest tenured player, Jackson Jacob, with a game-high 24 points, after pouring in 17 points in the first half. He had an efficient night from the field, where he went 9-for-18 to shoot 50 percent. The guard also missed one of his eight attempts from the charity stripe. Head coach for the Giants, Perry Thompson, spoke about Jacob’s play on opening night

Michael Bain did not score in double figures for the Giants, but he acted as a facilitator with 10 assists and 12 rebounds. Dylan Musgrove had 24 points in 37 minutes.

Leading the way for the Rockets was Livingston Munnings, who finished with 22 points. Newcomer Kemsey Sylvestre scored 16 points before fouling out.

The Giants had the hot hand shooting 48.7 percent from the field while Rockets shot 40 percent. The Giants’ largest lead was 22 points, as they scored 27 fast break points and had 16 steals. Thompson said that his players played a strong first half and strong fourth quarter to start the season off in the win column.

“It had to be a statement game. There was a lot of talk before the game and interviews going on, so we had to come back and remind them who we were. We always have a target on our backs whether we win or not. The name alone brings a lot of pressure, and we try to keep the program up and bring the experience. We worked hard and it showed on the court,” Thompson said.

After the Rockets opened the game on a 2-0 lead, which was their only lead of the game, the Giants went on a 10-1 run to go up 10-3 with 7:12 left in the first quarter. That lead quickly went into their first double-digit lead on the night at 21-12 with 2:18 left in the game.

The first quarter ended with the Giants up 26-16.

The 5:54 mark saw the Giants holding their largest lead of the game on Eugene Bain’s jumpshot when they led 41-19. The Giants led 56-39 at the end of the first half as they held the momentum.

The Rockets won the third quarter 21-16, but did not put a dent in the Giants’ lead, as the Giants were up 72-60. A 32-29 advantage in the fourth gave them the win.

There were two games in the NPBA yesterday. The first one was a Division II matchup between the Cyber Tech Blue Marlins and the Bahamas Institute of Business and Technology (BIBT) Great Whites. The Blue Marlins win 79-74 over the Great Whites on a 22-13 first quarter advantage. They were led by reserve Cedron Cummings, who scored 16 points. Alexio Frances scored a team-high 14 points in the loss.

The second matchup pit the University of The Bahamas Mingos against the Zulu Media Great Whites. No scores for that game were available at press time.

The Exuma Sailing Club hosted the event for the first time and welcomed 10 sailors from the Bahamas National Sailing School (BNSS) from Nassau, and 14 of its own sailors from Exuma.

The weather conditions provided some big challenges for the smaller, younger and newer sailors to overcome, with winds up over 20 knots for most of the races. However, the seasoned veteran junior sailors from New Providence embraced the chance to test their skills in conditions typical for November in Exuma – big winds and tight chop straight from the eastern end of Elizabeth Harbour

Finishing third overall from the Exuma Sailing Club was Joss Knowles. Drawing on his years of experience sailing in similar conditions in Elizabeth Harbour, Knowles kept the pressure on Ferguson and Weech throughout the competition.

Sailing to fourth place was Norman Cartwright from the BNSS, and in fifth place was Tanaj Manos of the Exuma Sailing Club.

Other sailors recognized were Christina Manos of the Exuma Sailing Club for the rookie sailor of the regatta. Jaron Francis of the BNSS got the “Class Act” sportsmanship award, and Kianno Hutchinson of the Exuma Sailing Club received the “Grit” award, given to the sailor that shows the most tenacity and never quit attitude throughout the whole event.

Coach Dallas Knowles of the Exuma Sailing Club praised the efforts of the Nassau Sailors and BNSS.

“It’s always great to have sailors visit us and enjoy sailing in one of the most beautiful places in The Bahamas. We know the effort it takes to bring teams of sailors and boats to off-island regattas, so hats off to Pedro Rahming from the BNSS, as well as

Jimmie and Lori Lowe for their amazing efforts to help make this regatta happen. We look forward to hosting this and similar events here for years to come. We enjoy the competition against higher level sailors, especially having two of the best here in Ferguson and Weech. It helps to show us how much farther we need to go as a club to compete. On the whole, we are very happy with the sailing and sportsmanship shown by all the athletes this past weekend, and of course we are so proud of our Exuma Sailing Club sailors for being good hosts and competing hard for the whole weekend.”

Most known for hosting the National Family Island Regatta every year in April, Exuma has now also hosted two national sailing events, Opti Nationals in 2020 and now the just concluded Sunfish Nationals.

The Bahamas’ under-14 (U14) coed team was able to capture the gold medal at the 2023 CARIFTA Water Polo Championships, held at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida. The tournament got underway on Friday and wrapped up on Sunday.

The team played in two tournaments at the same venue, and finished with the bronze medal in the other tournament. The team was coached by veteran water polo coach Laszlo Borbely. Assisting him was Wandalee Burrows.

Three first quarter goals put The Bahamas off to a good start, as Bonaire was able to get the ball past Isaiah Colon once in that period. Colon was named the top goalkeeper in the tournament.

After a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Bonaire poured in six goals in the second period to take a 7-4 lead at the half. Looking to find some offense after a tough second quarter, it was none other than Shanterro Knowles – the top goal scorer in the tournament – who scored two goals in the third quarter to bring The Bahamas back in the game. The Bahamas also got a goal from Jamar Bienamie, while Bonaire scored one more goal to make it 8-7 when the whistle ended the quarter.

It was a masterful defensive fourth quarter by The Bahamas, as they did not concede a single goal. On the offensive side of the ball, Bienamie came up clutch for The Bahamas and scored two goals in that final quarter to finish with three goals in the game. Knowles also scored one goal to make it 10-8 as he finished with four goals in that game.

Also scoring in that game were Paityn Burrows, Jayden Smith and Caylen Brown with one goal each.

In the other tournament, The Bahamas was third after going up against Orlando United earlier in the day. They lost that game 14-11.

Knowles finished with three goals in that game, with all coming in the fourth period. Bienamie also scored three goals as he scored one in each quarter except the third quarter. Brown came away with two goals while Smith and Jahmahl Wilson scored a goal each in the loss.

The Bahamas opened the CARIFTA Championships with an 18-6 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. They then drew with Bonaire 8-8 in their second match. In their second match against Trinidad and Tobago, they won convincingly again with a 22-8 scoreline.https://a18b15d3bfd9e3d40f7ca2bcb14bd804.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

The team returned home yesterday.
