The L.W. Young Golden Eagles were able to complete the back door sweep to take down the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves in the junior boys division in the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) volleyball championships, at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium on Friday. The Golden Eagles won that best-of-three series 2-1.

The Golden Eagles won that match in two straight sets as they played a very focused game. They won the first set 25-23 and came back and won the second set 25-20. Head coach for the Golden Eagles, Rashad Brice thanked God for the victory.

“It was a sweet victory. We came out flat in the first match, but we handled our business in game two and we executed well in game three and did what we do best and that is win,” Brice said.Kwan on Gold Glove, moreKwan on Gold Glove, morecloseNextStay

The first set saw the Golden Eagles jumping out to an 11-6 lead. As expected, the Timberwolves made a run and cut into that deficit, as the Golden Eagles led 14-13. That lead jumped to 21-17 with the Golden Eagles taking their play to another level and eventually getting the 25-22 win.

Brice was not surprised that the Timberwolves put up a fight in the first set.

The second set saw the Golden Eagles jumping out to a 12-7 lead but like the first set, the Timberwolves pushed back and tied the game at 15 points. The Golden Eagles went on a run and went up 22-16, which was the difference in the set. The Timberwolves did not get any closer, as the Golden Eagles completed the back door sweep and got the 25-20 victory.

“We settled down and got our plays and looks,” Brice said. “We were able to find open holes on the court. I am proud of my players. We were supposed to be in the championships last year, but I wanted to send my seniors off on a good note this year because they deserve to be victors.”

Winning the Most Valuable Player was the Golden Eagles’ Kevense Vilme.

The Golden Eagles’ title comes a day after the three other division champions were crowned. The senior boys division was won by the Timberwolves, and the C.V. Bethel Stingrays secured the senior girls title. The H.O. Nash Lions walked away as champions in the junior girls division.

The volleyball season has wrapped up and it’s time for the highlight of the GSSSA sports calendar – basketball. That season gets underway on Monday, November 20.
