#NEARLY 100 players with an appetite for golf and a desire to support a worthy cause turned out for the inaugural ‘Tee off for Hunger’ golf tournament at Ocean Club Golf Club recently, helping to raise more than $70,000 in sponsorships, prizes and donations for the Bahamas Feeding Network.

#“It was a great day for golf for a great cause,” said Felix Stubbs, chairman of the Bahamas Feeding Network, the tournament’s beneficiary.

#“We want to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, those who donated prizes and in other ways lent support to help make this tournament a success and to ease the pain of hunger for many.”

#The Bahamas Feeding Network, formed in 2013 with a handful of churches, now provides 72,000 meals monthly through a network that supports nearly 100 soup kitchens, church feeding centres and other organisations.

#Its annual budget runs more than $2 million with only a tiny fraction used for administrative costs, thanks to a patron who absorbs expenses, including rent.

#But on this Sunday, under a clear blue sky and the shimmering ocean waters for a backdrop, the spirit of giving was matched by the drive to win.

#Players had their eye on the prizes – a brand new Mercedes Benz for a hole-in-one on the 12th hole, a seven-day Mediterranean cruise thanks to Royal Caribbean, a Dallas sports weekend inclusive of box seats at a Dallas Cowboys game and round of golf at a famed Texas course, thanks to the Beck Group which also donated courtside seats at a Duke men’s basketball game.

#“The prizes we got donated were amazing,” said Mario Carey, a BFN director and tournament host. “Sports weekends, Mandara Spa treatments, MacFit membership, fine dining experiences including Graycliff, Sapodilla and Café Matisse, resort stays from Baha Mar, Grand Isle, Romora Bay and Stella Maris, and golf lessons and play at Albany and Atlantis all on the line – and I think it was because it was such a worthy cause.”

#Carey, a golfer himself, said the level of play was extraordinary.

#More than a quarter of the players came in at par or below.

#Mark Carter, a volunteer who helped organise the tournament, was closest to the pin prize on that hole-in-one, beating out Phil Andrews by three inches.

#For BFN executive director Archdeacon James Palacious, the tournament’s success was a testament to the need that BFN helps to fulfill.

#“When those who would even be competitors in a given industry or field come together for a worthy cause, you know the power of unity with a purpose, and that is what we experienced today — a super group of people playing a game they love for a cause they respect,” explained Palacious.

#DORAL, Florida – The University of The Bahamas women’s volleyball team dropped both matches against Atlantis University over the weekend in the South Florida area.

#The team lost the first match Friday 25-10, 25-5 and 25-7. The second game they performed better but still lost in straight sets – 25-13, 25-21 and 25-10.

#Head coach Raymond Wilson said despite the losses he saw improvement for the team over the two matches.

#“They hustled much better in the second game than the first game,” he said.

#“They showed much more of their potential and their ability to play this game at a high level. I give them a little above average on their productivity and I can only see better things ahead for them.”

#This weekend’s tour was the team’s first set of games in more than three years. Many on the team are true freshmen as well. Coach Wilson added the team is still improving and will continue to make its presence known.

#“This is now the practical side of things and I would give them slightly above average,” he said.

#“There is much for them to learn and it isn’t just about learning basics but also how to cut down on errors. We lost a lot of points on errors. So once we can clean it up and make less errors we will be doing great.”

#The Mingoes were expected to open their New Providence Volleyball Association season yesterday against the Bamboo Shack Lady Warhawks and Wilson said he’s putting the league on notice. “This will be the first time these young ladies will have seen any type of high level volleyball action so when we hit the court for NPVA we expect a good performance from them,” he said.

#“In fact I guarantee this team will be in playoffs and if people don’t watch out for us we will make championship.”

#The Mingoes are next expected to play The Panthers at The DW Davis Gymnasium.

#Team Bahamas is poised to make history for the local development of the sport when they compete in the 2022 International Automobile Federation (FIA) Motorsport Games.

#The seven-member team of Dominick Robinson, Jashai Burrows, Caden Burbridge, Chris Bain, Maria Scott, Gisele Liriano and Romando Hudson are expected to compete against drivers from 72 countries at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Marseille, France. Hudson, Bain, Burrows and Liriano are scheduled to compete in the four-hour Karting Endurance race.

#Top co-ed competition will also feature teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, Peru, Georgia, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom. Each will compete in identical Tillotson T4 machinery. Official practice will commence on Friday, October 28, ahead of qualifying on Saturday morning. The four-hour medal race will take place at 11:30am on Saturday. Burnbridge and Scott are scheduled to compete in the Karting Slalom competition. The entry list includes 21 teams competing in a parallel slalom course in relay format. The co-ed event features drives 14-16 years old.

#Teams must complete three laps – one test and two timed runs – to establish an overall leaderboard.

#The fastest teams will then progress to the knockout phase of head-to-head time trials, culminating in the final to determine the medal winners.

#The Bahamas will compete alongside Poland, Hong Kong China, Peru, Germany, Estonia, Slovakia, Malta, Spain, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Kosovo, Hungary, Albania, Israel, Ukraine, Belize, Canada, Netherlands, and Belgium.

#The Karting Slalom competition begins on Friday and concludes with the medal rounds on Sunday.

#The multi-discipline FIA Motorsports games return to competition for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Karting segment of the event has grown from 30 contested events in 2019 to 57 this year. Karting was also featured as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

#In total, this year’s event will feature 10 new disciplines, and The Bahamas will be one of 29 first time countries participating.

#At the opening ceremony, Robert Reid, FIA Deputy President for Sport, said the growth of the sport and its diversity should be celebrated.

#“[At the FIA] we’re first and foremost a federation of member clubs. We stood on a manifesto of regional empowerment and [national] sports clubs are very important to us. To see so many of them here, not just European clubs represented but clubs from all over the world is great. We also stood on a commitment to double motorsport participation, so the grassroots are very important to us,” he said. “Motorsport is expensive at the top and it doesn’t have to be at the bottom end, so it’s important to celebrate that at events like this one. The fact that nations have come even with one competitor is brilliant. Well done to everybody who’s come along, to all the countries for putting the teams in, and to the competitors for being here. You couldn’t have a better display of equality, diversity and inclusivity than we’ve seen tonight.”

CYCLIST Felix Neely competes against his peers at the Caribbean Under-23 Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic.

#ON the heels of his trip to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England in August, Felix Neely got a chance to compete against his peers at the Caribbean Under-23 Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic.

#While he turned in a 10th place finish in the time trials on Saturday in a time of 47 minutes and 45 seconds, he came back on Sunday and ended up 46th overall in the gruelling road race in just over three hours and 26 minutes.

#“I felt very relaxed sitting the peloton and I felt very strong during the race, although I was the only competitor representing the Bahamas,” said Neely, who was accompanied by coach Lee Gibbs from Grand Bahama.

#“Most of the other countries had at least five competitors, so it was going to be very difficult for me to win a medal. But I finished both the time trials and the road race, which was the biggest thing for me going to the championships.”

#Kaden Hopkins of Bermuda won the time trials in 36:41, followed by Raphael Lautone from Guadeloupe in 38:59 for second and Christopher Morales of Puerto Rico in third in 39:08.

#In the road race, Edwin Nubul of Martinique won the road race in 3:00.46. Guadeloupe got second and third from Jeremy Deloumeaux and Taino Caillianu in the same times of 3:01:04.

#It was the third time for Neely competing in the championships, having participated as a juvenile and a junior.

#“I was very pleased with the result,” he said.

#“I was very pleased with the performance. The competition was what I expected.

#“I knew there were some teams that were going to be very strong, so I didn’t expect anything outstanding. I felt more confident riding with them. I didn’t expect anything other than what they did.”

#Federation secretary general Barron Musgrove said Neely’s progression has inspired him to compete both locally and internationally.

#“He finished the event. None of our competitors in the past finished the race,” Musgrove said.

#“So, we intend to expose him more and more along with some of our younger cyclists like Barron Musgrove Jr and Aiden Bain out of Grand Bahama.

#“Felix is still relatively young, so we hope that we can develop a four-to-five-man team that will be able to compete as a team in events like these in the future and hopefully we can get closer to getting a medal on the international scene.”

#The goal, according to Musgrove, is to have some representation at the Olympics, if not in 2024, by 2028 and they are looking at Neely leading the charge in the future.

#International beach soccer returned to the national stadium and the senior men’s national team made history before an enthusiastic home crowd eager to see the sport once again played at the highest level.

#The Bahamas completed an undefeated run to claim the 2022 Bahamas Beach Soccer Cup last night with a thrilling 3-1 win over Colombia in the tournament finale.

#They topped the table with nine points and a goal differential of seven – 16 scored and nine against.

#Lesly St Fleur was named tournament MVP and finished second with four goals scored while Michael Butler was named best goalkeeper.

#In a slow-paced first period, attacking predominantly with Butler, The Bahamas fell behind on Colombia’s lone goal of the night when Eduardo Edu scored at the 5:35 mark.

#After a scoreless second, St Fleur moved from defender to forward, and for the second time this tournament, it sparked a Bahamas come-from-behind win.

#Brandon Adderley delivered a strike to give the home team its first goal and tie the game 1-1 with 7:34 left to play in regulation.

#The game appeared headed for extra time when Butler was awarded a penalty kick with 30 seconds left in the match.

#After his shot was blocked, Wood Julmis headed in the rebound to give The Bahamas the go ahead score, 2-1 with just over 27 seconds left to play.

#“When the ball was bouncing around I think it was just a natural reaction to me, dive, put my head on it and get the goal. I’m always eager to try and fight for the goal, score for my country,” he said.

#“I had to celebrate, I had to enjoy every single moment, it was a special moment for me.”

#Julmis said the moment was amplified by the raucous crowd in attendance that joined in on his goal celebration. “I’ve been on the national team for three years now, we’ve always played on the road, never played in a tournament at home, this is amazing. To play here in front of our fans is amazing and the support our fans gave us is extraordinary.”

#Gary Joseph converted his penalty kick with 13 seconds left for the final score.

#Head coach Gavin Christie said despite the methodical pace of the first two periods, his message to his side during the match was one of patience.

#“I told the guys, you have to be patient with this game. In beach soccer, one or two goals doesn’t mean anything. I told the guys to stick with the gameplan and our time will come – thankfully that came in the third period when we were able to score those goals and take this victory,” he said.

#“For The Bahamas to win all three games against tough competition shows that we are ready for the next step in this sport in The Bahamas.”

#St Fleur missed on several shot opportunities in the finale but was pleased with the resilience his team showed over the course of the weekend.

#“It was a great tournament, every game we played we started off slow and we recovered in the end. This match showed who had it more and who wanted to win the game and in the end, it was us,” he said.

#“It’s a great pleasure to play in front of our fans. They gave us the vibes, we feed off of their energy so we hope for them to continue to support us and I want to thank them for coming out.”

#Both player and coach see this tournament win as the beginning of a trek toward the goal of qualifying for the 2023 Beach Soccer World Cup.

#“This is the start for the World Cup, for the Qualifiers next year,” St Fleur said. “We want to encourage everyone to come out, train with us, and try to make the team. We are trying to build a young team with veteran leadership.”

#Christie added: “The Bahamas has really been wanting beach soccer back, now we have it and we’ve brought it back in grand style. The next thing on the list is World Cup qualifying and this tournament was really the kickoff for our programme to get started toward that goal in 2023.”

#The men entered the final day as the highest goal scoring team of the tournament.

#The Bahamas concluded night one with a furious four-goal rally in the third period to clinch a come from behind win.

#St Fleur’s third period hat trick and a staunch defensive effort powered The Bahamas’ 7-4 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

#The visitors took an early 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Coker and Riley.

#The Bahamas answered with a goal from Adderley before Riley answered with his second goal of the period for a 3-1 lead.

#Julmis ended the high scoring period with a goal for The Bahamas to make the score 3-2 at the end of one. Jean Francois’ goal was the only score of the second period and the teams took a 3-3 score into the final period.

#Game two was a 6-4 win over Costa Rica.

#The visitors struck first on the first of two goals from Roger at the 7:54 mark in the first period but The Bahamas took control on goals from Joseph (3:45’) and Butler (2:42’) less than a minute apart.

#The second period featured four goals as The Bahamas maintained their advantage.

#Adderley scored at 9:13” to give The Bahamas a 3-1 lead. Greivin scored the first of his two goals in the period to bring Costa Rica within one (8:54’), only to have the home team regain their two-goal advantage just minutes later on a Kyle Williams strike at the 8:49’ mark. In the final period, Roger scored his second goal of the game at 8:33’ but The Bahamas closed out scoring with goals from St Fleur (7:25’) and Julmis (5:14’)

#The women’s national team finished winless after losses to Turks and Caicos and Trinidad and Tobago.

#On night one, The Bahamas women fell to Turks and Caicos 3-2.

#The Bahamas got goals from Janeka Edey and Angel Williams.

#Turks and Caicos lost their opening match to Trinidad and Tobago, but took the lead against their hosts on Saturday night.

#Last night, The Bahamas came up on the wrong end of the highest scoring match of the tournament, an 11-6 loss to Trinidad and Tobago.

#Edey scored a hat trick for The Bahamas, Jada Thelamour added two goals and Haddassah Knowles added another.

#Joan Cuscó, president of Beach Soccer Worldwide, stated that “it is great to return to the Bahamas after our last event in Nassau in 2018.

#“We have so many good memories of all the tournaments we had in the Bahamas, and to play in a World Cup stadium is an assurance of a quality event.”

#For Anton Sealey, president of the Bahamas Football Association, “this tournament is an opportunity to see some of the best talent competing in Nassau, in the best beach soccer facilities in the region, confirming the successful bet placed on the 2017 World Cup”.

#ONE championship title has been decided but the other series moves to a fifth and deciding game in the New Providence Softball Association.

#In the women’s division, the Sunshine Auto Wildcats claimed their fourth consecutive league title with a three-game sweep of the R and B Operators.

#And it all comes down to one final game between the Cybertech Blue Marlins and C and S Enterprise Hitmen with the series tied at 2-2. Game five is set for 8pm Tuesday at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

#In game four on Saturday night, Thomas Davis was dominant on the mound and limited the high powered Hitmen offence to a single run in his team’s 3-1 win.

#Both teams have alternated wins thus far in the series. The Hitmen took game one 3-1 and the Marlins evened the series with a dominant 18-0 win in game two. In game three the Hitmen won another high scoring affair, 10-3.

#The Wildcats closed out the series with a 14-13 win.

#The Operators tied the game at 13 in the top half of the seventh, only to have the defending champions score the go ahead run and claim another title for the club. They took game one 7-5 and won 12-7 in game two.

#Registered participants of all skill levels will have the opportunity to engage in a friendly competition as well as networking on the greens in the two-person scramble tournament to be held on Sunday, October 30 at the Royal Blue Golf Club, located at the Baha Mar Resort, Cable Beach. Shotgun start time is 9am and registration for the event is $275 per player.

#As breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in The Bahamas, the Chamber has chosen to offer part proceeds to the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support group to aid in the effort to find a cure for the deadly disease, whose mission is to provide supportive care, encouragement, coping skills, resources, strength and hope for all who have or had cancer. This dynamic attachment by women to others will promote health, wholeness and healing.

#The BCCEC has commenced its in-person events once again, having relaunched its popular Power Breakfast series back in August following a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming Golf Classic will serve not only as a fundraiser but also as a great networking opportunity for Chamber members.

#THE Bahamian contingent in competition at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta turned in several milestone performances for Bahamas rowing against some of the top sailors around the world.

#Dehron Smith competed in the Men’s Championship Sculls Division, Dr Kathryn De Souza in the Grand Master Veterans Single Sculls Division and sisters Jessica and Poppy Proffitt in the Youth Women’s Under 17 Doubles Sculls Division at the event last weekend in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

#The Proffitt sisters, both students at the Lyford Cay International School, were the top finishers for Team Bahamas and finished 37th overall in the 55-team field of race 51 in 21:00.467 seconds. Their time finished 15th among the under-17 teams.

#This was the second appearance at the Head of the Charles Regatta for the 16-year-old Jessica. She has also rowed at the Indian Creek Regatta (Miami, October 2019), Miami International Regatta (Miami, April 2022), CanAmMex International Regatta for Team Bahamas (Ontario, Canada, July 2022)

#Poppy, 14, has rowed in both the Miami Regatta and CanAmMex.

#Dr De Souza finished 61st overall in the 79-competitor field of the Women’s Grand Master Veterans Women’s Singles Race.

#Her time of 25:22.116, no. 26 among the Grand Master Singles Fleet of 34 competitors.

#Dr De Souza, 58, is a physician specialising in sports medicine/physical medicine and rehabilitation, and has been rowing competitively for just over four years.

#She made her debut at the Head of the 2021 Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

#Smith finished 24th in the 21:17.852 seconds in the Men’s Championship Singles.

#A 22-year-old senior at Ithaca College, Smith has also competed at the 2022 Under-23 World Rowing Championships.

After a week of great competition, the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) concluded its 2022 Fidelity Senior Nationals on Sunday in grand fashion at the National Tennis Center. The finalists took to the courts all vying to be crowned national champions. Both men and women participated in singles and doubles categories in their various age divisions.

The title sponsor of the event was Fidelity Bank (Bahamas) Limited.

Cory Francis had a busy weekend going after three titles. He won two and was the runner-up in the other one. He won the men’s 55 when he took down Ken Kerr. He and Stephen Thompson teamed up to win the men’s doubles 55 division. They won against Larry Rolle and Patrick Fernander. The duo could not replicate their play in the men’s doubles 35, as they fell to the champions, Ivan Hooper and Alexander Murbach.

Francis was the only participant in the tournament to advance to three finals.

Tara Mactaggart played her way to win two titles. The first one she won was with Neil Mactaggart in the mixed doubles. They took down Chigoze Ijeoma and Marsha Williams. Tara Mactaggart won the women’s doubles with Sarah Beukes. They won against Sh’Ron Saunders and Ellie Brown.

The women’s 35 division was won by Sh’Ron Saunders, who defeated Esther Newton. The men’s 35 division saw Alexander Murbach taking down Bjorn Ferguson.

Hooper won the men’s 45 division after winning against Shaun Mahelis.

The sportsmanship trophies for both male and female were determined by the players themselves and were awarded based on the highest vote-getters in the tournament. Fernander and Newton captured the male and female awards respectively.

BLTA President Perry Newton expressed his gratitude to Fidelity Bank (Bahamas) Limited for its sponsorship and Fidelity Chief Executive Officer Gowon Bowe for assisting with the trophy presentations. He also extended thanks to those who worked hard to ensure the tournament was a success, including Esther Newton, BLTA Vice-President Chilean Burrows, Darnette Weir, Mickey Williams and Francis.

This year, the tournament was named in honor of Wesley Rolle, for his contribution to the development of tennis in The Bahamas. His son, Willis Rolle accepted an award on behalf of his father.

It was a busy weekend for Bahamian collegiate water polo players Saequan Miller and Aidan Johnson, as they were in action for their schools in separate regional championships.

Miller and the Salem University Tigers won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Championship, by remaining undefeated in their three games at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. The tournament began on Saturday and wrapped up on Sunday.

Johnson and the Washington & Jefferson University Presidents were in action in the Division III Eastern Championships, at the David Hallman III Aquatics Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Tigers’ final game on Sunday saw them taking on Gannon University, which was their toughest matchup during the weekend. They won that game in dramatic fashion, 13-12. Gannon led 10-9 heading into the fourth quarter. A resilient Tigers squad powered their way to outscore Gannon 6-4 in the final period, to lift the championship trophy for the first time since 2004.

The first match saw the Tigers winning 17-15 against McKendree University. The Tigers were down 8-7 at the half before storming back in the second half to start the weekend off on the right note. The second game saw the Tigers playing Mercyhurst University. They clobbered Mercyhurst 23-6.

The three wins give the Tigers a 12-11 win/loss record on the season and 3-4 in conference play. They will look to improve their season record when they have a weekend clash against McKendree, Gannon and Mercyhurst on November 5-6 in Lebanon, Illinois.

Johnson and the Presidents went 2-1 on the weekend. They took down Connecticut College 18-6 in their final game on Sunday. They were up 5-2 at the end of the first half and went on to score 13 points in that period to win 18-6.

In the game before that on Sunday, they took down host school Penn State University Behrend 14-6. They were dominant in that game, taking a 12-4 lead after the third period.

Saturday saw the Presidents suffering their only loss of the weekend to Austin College. The Presidents lost 13-6 in that game.

The Presidents are now 9-6 overall on the season and return to action on November 18-19 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Los Angeles, California.

With Miller and Johnson not playing this weekend, Bahamian Nicholas Wallace-Whitfield and his Mount St. Mary’s University Mountaineers will have a three-game slate at three different locations this weekend. They will take on Wagner College, Fordham University and George Washington University.
