For a fourth year, Bahamian collegiate tennis player Sydney Clarke is continuing a trend of giving back to the community. She is supporting the Children’s Emergency Hostel on McKinney Avenue with a donation drive this Christmas season.

Clarke is in her senior year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Children’s Emergency Hostel is a place that she has been doing community service at for some time now.

The donation drive for this year began on December 11 and will wrap up on Friday December 22.

This year she is looking for people to donate the same items – non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, toiletries and new clothes and shoes.

As an athlete, she feels that it was important for her to assist in some way.

“It is important for me to give back because people have helped me in my athletic career on and off the court, so I feel this is a way to give back to others by using my platform to help the kids at the Children Emergency Hostel,” she said.

Last year’s event was a little smaller than usual, and for her, it has been tough doing most of the work. She is looking forward to this year’s drive.

“The drive went well last year. It was smaller. I have been planning it by myself and not partnering with other people,” Clarke said. “Being a college student trying to balance this with other things, and when I come home to manage this, I have to prepare for tournaments. It has been a little hectic, but I do my best in order to get as much donations as I can, using my social media platforms and spreading it via word of mouth through my family and friends to get the word around. This year, I am expecting people to give as much as they can.”

As mentioned earlier, Clarke is in her senior year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her fall season wrapped up in early November and they will get the spring season underway with a matchup against Lipscomb University on Saturday January 13 in Nashville, Tennessee. Clarke said she is looking forward to that matchup and the rest of the season.https://3bb6346f6520cadfe9477f522b542747.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html
