FIBA Centrobasket: Team Bahamas in win column

#After improving in each of their first three games played, the Bahamas junior boys’ team finally got in the win column at the FIBA Under-15 Centrobasket Championships.

#In a matchup of two winless teams yesterday at the Colieseo Fernando ‘Rube’ Hernandez in Puerto Rico, Team Bahamas pulled off a 94-57 victory over Costa Rico to push their record to 1-3.

#Team Bahamas, coached by Quentin Hall, Denykco Bowles and Kevin Clarke, was blown out in their first three games, losing 107-42 to Puerto Rico in Saturday’s opener, 99-49 to Mexico in game two on Sunday and 70-59 to the Dominican Republic in game three on Monday.

#Team Bahamas opened a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and extended it to 10-2.

#But after going up 12-4, both teams went into a scoring drought.

#Costa Rica came back to cut the deficit to 14-11 before Aiden Miller scored on what was an attempted fastbreak slam dunk that he turned into a lay-up for a 16-11 lead before they held on for an 18-11 lead at the end of the first break.

#Team Bahamas opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run for a 24-11 lead and extended it to 11, 26-15.

#After Costa Rica managed to trim the lead to 33-25 with just over three minutes to go, Team Bahamas went on another scoring spree to surge ahead 44-27 at the half.

#In holding Costa Rica scoreless, Team Bahamas surged ahead 54-27 to start the third quarter.

#After cutting the deficit to 56-35 over the next few minutes, Costa Rica watched as Team Bahamas exploded for a 68-45 advantage at the end of the third.

#Again holding Costa Rica scoreless to start the fourth quarter, Team Bahamas extended their margin to 78-45 with a little over five minutes left. Another surge with over two minutes remaining enabled Team Bahamas to go up 88-53.

#While it boiled down to what the final score would be, there was an issue of whether or not Team Bahamas could have scored more than 100 points.

#Joshua Williams exploded for a game high 18 points and six rebounds, Desmond Hall had 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals and Trevon Clarke had 13 points and three rebounds.

#Noah Bain also had nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, Kenyon Johnson added eight points with five rebounds, Aiden Miller finished with seven points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds.

#Condae Smith also had seven points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Bradleon McDonald chipped in with six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

#Josafat Cedeno was the only player in double figures for Costa Rica with 16 points, nine rebounds and two assists.

#Team Bahamas will play Turks and Caicos Islands in their final regular season game at 3pm today before they determine where they will end up for the final playoffs that start on Thursday.

#The Turks and Caicos won their only game so far in the tournament against Costa Rica.
