#AN active night for Bahamian minor league baseball players featured three prospects hitting their first home runs of the season and another in his second start on the mound.

#Kristian Robinson, Trent Deveaux and Keithron Moss all homered Tuesday night in their respective leagues.

#Robinson, the No.5 ranked prospect for the Arizona Diamondbacks, helped lead his Hillsboro Hops to a 7-0 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes — and alone into first place in the South Division of the Northwest League at 8-4. He finished with two-RBI and scored one run.

#In his first Single A season, Robinson has made an immediate impression on the Hops lineup.

#Through 11 games, Robinson is hitting .341 with 15 hits, four doubles, scored five runs, 10 RBI, four stolen bases an OBP of .420, OPS of .920, and slugging .500.

#In the Arizona Rookie League, Deveaux had a successful day at the plate but his AZL Angels suffered a 15-5 loss to the AZL Padres 2.

#Deveaux led off with his home run in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but the Angels were unable to keep pace with the Padres’ offensive outburst stemming from their six runs in the first inning. Deveaux went 2-5, scored two runs with his solo home run and RBI. He got the season off to a quick start when he went 3-5 with one RBI and scored one run in the 8-4 loss to AZL Giants Orange. Through 11 games, Deveaux is hitting .333 with 10 hits, three RBI and a .994 OPS.

#Deveaux is listed as No. 15 on the Angels’ list of top 30 prospects and was voted one of the fastest players in all of the minor leagues by Baseball America.

#The 19-year-old outfielder appeared in 44 games in the Arizona Rookie League last year and hit .199 with a .309 OBP, .556 OPS with 11 RBI, 20 runs scored, seven stolen bases and one home run.

#Moss is in his first season of the Arizona Rookie League after spending last season in the Dominican Summer League. He recorded hits in three of his first four games this season in his progression to the AZL, including his two-run home run in the Rangers’ 10-5 loss to the AZL Cubs.

#After the Cubs took a 4-0 lead in the first, Moss hit a two-run homer with one on and one out in the second to bring his team within two runs.

#Through four games he is hitting .214 with three RBI and scored three runs with a .741 OPS.

#Moss, the 17-year-old infielder, appeared in 51 games last year and hit .196 with 11 doubles, 23 RBI, 29 runs scored and eight stolen bases.

#Tahnaj Thomas got his second start with the Bristol Pirates in the Appalachian League. He fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one over 1 1/3 innings in the Pirates’ 6-5 loss to the Twins.

#Thomas is currently the No.16 ranked player in the Pittsburgh Pirates organisation and No.5 among pitchers, according to MLB Pipeline.

#THERE are now five Bahamian baseball prospects on Spring Training rosters for their respective Major League Baseball organisations.

#Anfernee Seymour (Miami Marlins) and Trent Deveaux (Los Angeles Angels) were the latest to receive the call up to the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues respectively last week. They joined Lucius Fox (Tampa Bay Rays), Jazz Chisholm (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Chavez Young (Toronto Blue Jays) who received their invitations earlier this offseason.

#Deveaux is listed as No. 17 on the Angels’ list of top 30 prospects. The 18-year-old outfielder appeared in 44 games in the Arizona Rookie League last year and hit .199 with a .309 OBP, .556 OPS with 11 RBI, 20 runs scored, seven stolen bases and one home run. “Deveaux continues to be one of the best athletes in the organisation. He has top of the scale speed, which should allow him to steal bases and cover a ton of ground as an above-average, if not eventually plus, centre fielder. Deveaux has pleased the organisation with his willingness to ask questions and learn with an understanding he has a long way to go,” according to his MLB Pipeline analysis.

#Seymour returned to the Marlins last season and fluctuated between the Double A and Single A levels. He was eventually re-promoted to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp of the Double A’s Southern League from the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Single A-Advanced Florida State League.

#The 23-year-old centrefielder was previously assigned to the Jumbo Shrimp earlier in the season but in just under two weeks, he was sent back down to the Hammerheads in Single-A.

#After being released by the Atlanta Braves (Florida Fire Frogs) in May, Seymour was signed by the Marlins just four days later and was subsequently assigned to the Hammerheads.

#In 51 games with the club, Seymour hit .284 with an .760 OPS and .433 slugging percentage. He totalled 57 hits, 11 doubles, five ripples, three home runs, with 24 RBI, 27 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. He struggled early this season with the Fire Frogs prior to his release and was batting just .195/.242/.287 with 28 strikeouts in 87 at bats.

#His season underwent a complete turnaround with the Hammerheads and recorded hits in nine of his first 11 games. For the season across three clubs, Seymour appeared in 100 games, hit .257 with a .697 OPS, 35 RBI with 24 stolen bases and four home runs.

The Majors: Jazz Plays For Marlins

#JAZZ Chisholm was the latest Bahamian to crack the Major League when he came out of the dugout to play for the Miami Marlins last night.

#The talented 22-year-old shortstop came in to complete the game for starter Miguel Rojas in a Marlins’ 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.

#While he didn’t get to bat, Chisholm made his first defensive play in the top of the ninth to help the Marlins preserve the win and improved their win-loss record to 16-15 on the season played without any fans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

#Chisholm follows Antoan Richardson, the last Bahamian to play in the Major League in 2014 with the New York Yankees in his second sting. He made his first appearance in 2011 with the Atlanta Braves.

#Andre Rodgers made the breakthrough for the Bahamas in 1957 with the New York Giants. As an infielder, Rodgers also played for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

#Outfielder Tony Curry played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cleveland Indians from 1960-66; outfielder Ed Armbrister played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1973-77, including the 1975 World Series when he was involved in a controversial bunt in game three; pitcher Wenty Ford played for the Braves in 1973 and outfielder/designated played Wilfred Culmer played for the Cleveland Indians in 1983.

#Chisholm was called up by the Marlins just before the game. He was traded from the Diamondbacks on July 31, 2019, but didn’t get to play Triple A ball as he was a high prospect, making their 40-man roster at the start of the season.

‘Jazz’ Chisholm Scores First Run Of Mlb Career

#Another day, another career milestone for Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm.

#Chisholm scored the first run of his MLB career yesterday in his Miami Marlins’ 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Cumberland, Georgia.

#Chisholm came up to bat with two outs in the top of the second against the Braves’ Ian Anderson. Facing a full count, he reached safely after his grounder was fielded by Anderson but an errant throw sailed high for an error. Chisholm eventually advanced to second.

#Miguel Rojas would follow with a double to left that plated Chisholm and brought the Marlins within one, 2-1. Rojas’ fourth hit of the game proved to be the game winner in the 10th inning when he doubled to right centre to score Garrett Cooper.

#Chisholm finished the game 0-4 at the plate but defensively, he was the catalyst for both Marlins double plays on the afternoon. In the first inning it was a “4-6-3” double play and in the ninth it was a 4-3 double play to end the Braves’ run and send the game to extra innings.

#The Marlins continue their series against the Braves tonight at 7:10pm.

#It was Chisholm’s second start for the Marlins, and his debut at secondbase. “I got plenty of work done [at the alternate training site] in Jupiter at secondbase and they told me I had a chance to play it. We’ve been working on second and short everyday, just getting better and I feel we put in enough work to get it done,” he told reporters on a Zoom call. “I feel comfortable at either position. You can put me anywhere on the field, anywhere in the lineup and I’ll be comfortable.”

#It was the second consecutive extra innings finish for the Miami Marlins after Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay.

#Chisholm said he has taken to the Marlins’ family atmosphere, everyone from part owner and Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter to the players in the clubhouse.

#“We had a small talk, it was really just him telling me to keep working hard, trusting the process and getting my work done everyday,” Chisholm said of his recent conversations with Jeter. “Everyone has taken me under their wing as best as they can to help me fit in and feel wanted here and to keep going with everything in our family atmosphere. We are going to win as a family, we are going to lose as a family and I’m very excited to be here for that reason because they treat everything as family.”

#The family aspect of the club has been a sentiment echoed by Jeter since Spring Training in February.

#“Guys are understanding that when you go out on the field, you’re expected to compete and you’re expected to win,” he said. “They’re growing closer. You hear players use words like ‘family’. That’s a good thing. That’s how great organisations are built.”

#Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm notched a career milestone with the first hit of his MLB career for the Miami Marlins against the American League East leading Tampa Bay Rays.

#Chisholm singled to right centre off the Rays’ Peter Fairbanks in the top of the seventh inning of the Marlins’ 5-4 extra innings loss yesterday at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, Florida.

#In a four pitch at bat, Chisholm got caught looking for strike calls on the first two pitches, a cutter and a sinker.

#Fairbanks followed with a curveball outside for a ball and when he followed with another curveball outside, Chisholm connected for the Marlins’ only hit of the inning.

#He was picked off caught stealing second during the following at bat.

#Chisholm also flashed his potential in the field with a highlight-reel worthy diving catch over his right shoulder in right centrefield for the first out of the eighth inning.

#He finished 1-4 on the afternoon at the plate and in the field, he had three assists and two putouts defensively.

#Yesterday’s game was Chisholm’s second start at shortstop and he appeared as a pinch runner Friday night as they fell to 17-18 on the season following the series.

#The Marlins remain on the road for a matchup with the Atlanta Braves today at 1:10pm.

#The series began with the Rays’ 5-4 win Friday night.

#Chisholm entered the game in the top of the ninth inning, pinch running starting shortstop Miguel Rojas.

#He advanced to second on a fielding error and was out on the ensuing at bat on a fielder’s choice.

#The Marlins won game two of the series 7-3 on Saturday night. Chisholm made his historic debut and became the seventh Bahamian to advance to the MLB on September 1. It was the first game of a back-to-back against the Toronto Blue Jays at Marlins Stadium. The Marlins won 3-2.

#The 22-year-old made his major league debut as a defensive substitute in the top of the eighth inning for shortstop Rojas, who left the game because of a sore abdomen.

#One night after his debut, Chisholm got the first big league start of his young career, filling in at shortstop for the injured Rojas. Chisholm went 0-4 at the plate and defensively had two assists and one putout in the Marlins’ 2-1 loss in their second game against the Blue Jays in as many nights.

#Following his callup, Chisholm said he remains cognisant of his role as an inspiration to future generations of aspiring Bahamian baseball players.

#“Everyone was telling me they were so proud of me and that I’m an inspiration to them and some of them were the guys that I was looking up to when I was younger so it touches me that I can touch anyone’s heart in the Bahamas. We know how the struggle has been back home for the past year with COVID-19 and I got called up to play on September first which makes a year since Hurricane Dorian passed, so all of that made it a special time for me,” he said, “Having my debut in Miami the closest place to home when I can’t be home, I’m always at a loss for words when I think of it. Getting called up to a playoff potential team, and i believe we’re going to make the playoffs, it’s just amazing. I think the whole Bahamas are Marlins fans now.”

#One night after his Major League Baseball debut, Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm got the first big league start of his young career for the Miami Marlins.

#Filling in at shortstop for an injured Miguel Rojas, Chisholm went 0-4 in the Marlins’ 2-1 loss in their second game against the Toronto Blue Jays in as many nights at Marlins Stadium in Miami, Florida.

#Defensively, Chisholm saw action early in the first inning when he threw out Jonathan Villar attempting to stretch a single into a double to retire the side.

#He caught a pop fly to retire Cavan Biggio in the eighth and had a busy ninth when he fielded a pair of groundballs, one to throw out Villar at first and the other an error in an attempt to throw out Teoscar Hernandez.

#At the plate, he struck out on four pitches in his first at bat, the final a curveball on the outside corner to end the inning with runners on second and third.

#In the fifth, Chisholm lined out to centrefield and in the seventh, he lined out to right field on a 2-2 count in his third plate appearance. In his final at bat, he flied out to centrefield in the bottom of the ninth.

#The Marlins dropped to 16-16 and face the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow night at 6:40pm.

#Chisholm made his historic debut Tuesday night in the first game of a back-to-back against the Blue Jays at Marlins Stadium. The Marlins won 3-2.

#The 22-year-old made his major league debut as a defensive substitute in the top of the eighth inning for shortstop Miguel Rojas, who left the game because of a sore abdomen.

#Rojas is listed as day-to-day on the team’s official injury report.

#On the very first pitch he saw defensively, Biggio hit a line drive shot directly to Chisholm who fielded it for his first MLB out.

#“Not the hardest line drive I’ve ever caught but it did slow the game down a lot more after that first pitch came at me,” he said.

#Primarily a shortstop throughout his career, Chisholm will reportedly see time at secondbase in the big leagues playing alongside Rojas once he returns from injury.

#“I got plenty of work done [at the alternate training site] in Jupiter at secondbase and they told me I had a chance to play it. We’ve been working on second and short everyday, just getting better and I feel we put in enough work to get it done. I feel comfortable at either position. We are going to win as a family, we are going to lose as a family and I’m very excited to be here for that reason because they treat everything as family.”

#Chisholm was set to make his 2020 debut in AAA baseball with the Wichita Wind Surge of the Pacific Coast League.

#He spent spring training and summer camp with the main squad after he was named to the 40-man roster. He missed the opening week of summer camp and was in quarantine after a series of positive and negative COVID-19 tests despite not experiencing any symptoms. After the Marlins made a series of trades prior to the deadline, Chisholm got the call to become the seventh Bahamian called up to the majors.

#“It was like a wild ride. The first thing I did was call all my family members. They were just ecstatic and started getting very emotional. It was a really touching moment for me knowing how far I came. On my way to the field I just had to say I wanted to clear my mind and help the team win. I was glad I was able to get into the game and to just get the first step and the onfield jitters out, but I’m just happy to be here,” Chisholm said, “At the point I got the call I wasn’t thinking of it. I was getting dressed for another game in Jupiter and I got called into the office. They just told me I was going to the show and to get my bags ready.”

#A product of the Freedom Farm Baseball League, Chisholm said he remains cognisant of his role as an inspiration to future generations.

#Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Chisholm will have the opportunity to produce and earn his spot in the rotation with the club.

#“Who knows where this goes? But for now, Jazz is a guy that’s going to be part of our club. We just move forward until whenever. He may never ever leave here, right? You don’t know that. These young guys, they could go back and forth, but some guys come up one day and just say, ‘You know what? I’m never leaving.’ And they prove it.” Mattingly said to MLB’s Jesse Sanchez, “He’s working hard and actually been playing quite a bit of second base, and that’s kind of where we see his niche or fit with our club, playing some second, maybe giving him a day at short now and then,” Mattingly said. “Jazz is part of the club right now, so we’ll try to fit him and set him up to have success and put him in good situations.”

#The No.3 ranked prospect in the organisation, Chisholm was listed at No.74 overall among the top 100 Prospects by MLB Pipeline. He made nine spring training appearances and hit .308 with three RBI, one home run, scored four runs, with a 1.115 OPS and two stolen bases.

#Last season, Chisholm was named the top defensive shortstop in the AA Southwest League and earned an All-Star selection after he led all the league’s shortstops with 21 home runs and 173 total bases.

#In 112 Southern League games last season with Jackson Generals and eventually with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Chisholm batted .220 with a .321 OBP, a .441 slugging percentage with 10 doubles, seven triples, 21 home runs, 54 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. He finished in a tie for second in the in home runs and fourth in triples.

Baseball Icon ‘Jim’ Wood Laid To Rest

Monday, December 29, 2014

#HUNDREDS of Bahamians packed the Holy Family Church on Robinson Road to pay their last respects to the late James ‘Jim’ Wood on Saturday.

#Wood, 78, was the longtime president of the Bahamas Baseball Association. In October, Wood and his officers signed an agreement with the Bahamas Baseball Federation, headed by Craig ‘Salty’ Kemp, to end a dispute in the sport that lasted for about two decades.

#He was survived by his wife, Eva, nine daughters, 10 sons and 60 grandchildren, the majority of whom he was instrumental in getting to play sports, mainly softball and baseball, but also volleyball, basketball, hockey and even bodybuilding.
