The Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC) has confirmed a 20-member team to represent The Bahamas at the 19th Pan American Games, from Friday October 20 to Sunday November 5, in Santiago, Chile.

The Bahamas will be represented in six disciplines – tennis, sailing, swimming, athletics, golf and wrestling. There are nine swimmers, five athletes in athletics, three tennis players, one sailor, one golfer and one wrestler.

Larikah Russell will coach tennis while Sara Knowles will be the coach for swimming. The coach for athletics is Antonio Saunders. The caddie for Johnson is Bahamas Golf Federation (BGF) President Lynford Miller.

BOC Vice President Clarence Rolle is the chef de mission of the team and fellow BOC Vice President D’Arcy Rahming Sr. will travel as one of the team’s delegates.

President of the BOC Romell ‘Fish’ Knowles said he has high expectations for the team.

“We expect some great performances. Led by Donald Thomas who is the cagey veteran, we believe it is a very strong team with talented athletes who are anxious to make their mark on the international scene,” said Knowles. “We have a number of young athletes and veteran athletes as well. The team is smaller than usual, but it is a good mixture. We are proud of them and we wish them well.”

Swimming gets underway on Saturday followed by tennis that starts next Monday. Sailing will begin on October 28 followed by athletics that begins on October 30. Wrestling begins on November 1. Golf is the final sport to start and that is set for November 12.

Knowles highlighted all of the disciplines that will be represented in Chile.

“We have Higgins on the water while tennis is loaded with talent with Justin Roberts, Sydney Clarke and Kevin Major. Swimming has a lot of talent with the experience of Ariel Weech and others such as Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson and Taylor who were at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games this past summer. There is also the talent of Barr, Russell, Luke-Kennedy Thompson, Mark-Anthony Thompson and Katelyn Cabral,” Knowles said.https://95f2163da9e15eef97cff8280064fd57.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

The most experienced team member is high jumper Donald Thomas who Knowles expects to perform at a high level.

“We’re looking for good things from Thomas, who is the senior man on the team. He’s going to obviously inspire the young athletes and it is exciting to watch him perform,” Knowles said. “Colebrooke is going to begin his Olympic push. We can expect at least a semifinal from him and then we have the decathlon athletes in Kendrick Thompson and Ken Mullings. Both are right on the cusp of qualifying for the Olympics and hopefully they can make the mark.

“We are pleased to extend the Olympic program and invite golf to the platform, and Johnson is coached by Miller, who will be his personal caddie. In wrestling, we have Mackey. He has been to a number of international tournaments and, hopefully, this is the one that he breaks through,” added Knowles.

The Bahamas had a 33-member team at the last Pan Am Games that was held in 2019 in Lima, Peru. The athletes competed in athletics, judo, swimming and tennis. TyNia Gaither won a bronze medal in the 200 meters (m) for women. It was the only medal for Team Bahamas.

Back home, ‘Jazz’ reflects on the season

Bahamian professional baseball player with the Miami Marlins Jasrado ‘Jazz’ Chisholm Jr. had another strong season in Major League Baseball (MLB).

The Marlins’ center fielder wrapped up his fourth season just over a week ago as the Marlins bowed out in the National League wild card playoffs to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Back in The Bahamas, Chisholm reflected on the season and looks ahead to next season.Uclosehttps://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.596.0_en.html#goog_1696393898Ad 1 of 1 (0:15)NextStay

The Bahamian holds himself to a very high standard. Although he was instrumental for the Marlins in the 97 games that he played in, he feels that he could have played better.https://8765adaaa3c4bd4b8eaebab5684347de.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

“Personally, if I don’t play 140 or 150 games, nobody would ever see my potential,” Chisholm said. “They only see half of it. For me, it’s just that every time I don’t get to 150 games, I feel like I had a bad season. I played just over 90 games this year and had 19 home runs. That’s okay for a regular player, but I’m not a regular player. For me, I feel if I play 140 games, that’s 40 home runs.”

Chisholm ended the regular season just one home run shy of a 20-20 season. He batted .252 with 19 home runs and 52 RBIs (runs batted in). He had 22 stolen bases, one short of his career high in that department, an on-base percentage of .305 and a slugging percentage of .462 for an on-base plus slugging percentage of .767.

The Bahamian played more games this season than the previous season when he played 60 games. He was on the injury list three times and will look to stay off that list next season.

Chisholm played a role in getting his team to the

postseason. One of the highlights for him was hitting grand slams on back-to-back days against the Atlanta Braves just days before the regular season concluded, becoming the first player in Marlins’ history to hit grand slam home runs in back-to-back games. The Marlins were swept 2-0 by the Phillies in the National League wild card playoffs.

“Those games were crazy in Philadelphia. The people in Philly, the fans out there going crazy. That’s the loudest I’ve ever heard in a stadium in my life,” Chisholm said.

Chisholm struggled but he and the Marlins plan on making the postseason again in the not too distant future.https://8765adaaa3c4bd4b8eaebab5684347de.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

“We plan to do it again. Now we know what it takes to get there, so we’re going to just get there again. Now, we know what it takes to win and we see how we have to play and who we got to play against to win. I feel for us, we just took it as an experience,” Chisholm said.

LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, is where the Marlins play their home games and it has been the venue of more and more fans in recent seasons. A small part of it has to do with the larger than life personality of Chisholm who has brought style and flair to Miami.

“The fans are coming out now and the stadium is rocking,” he said. “I feel like since we’ve gotten to the playoffs this year, it showed Miami that we’re not the old Marlins that were led by other people. The vibe is different, the clubhouse is different, the staff is different and the players are different. We’re coming out to rock every night. Honestly, we feel like we are like artists out there more than anything else because we’re coming to entertain everybody. We play fun baseball and I feel like Miami is starting to live with that.”

This past season, Chisholm was moved from playing second base and shortstop to center field. It was a change he acclimated himself to after a while.

“I feel like it got easier from the first month in spring training. When I got into the season, it just clicked and it started coming together in games. Being a person that just loves to compete and be out there, I take it to heart when I’m not the best person out there. I had to flip a switch and feel it out,” Chisholm said.https://8765adaaa3c4bd4b8eaebab5684347de.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

So far, Chisholm is spending his offseason wearing a walking boot on his right foot after undergoing ‘turf’ toe surgery last week Tuesday. Chisholm said it went well and he should be back running in January. He initially suffered the injury in May of this year, and is expected to be back to baseball activities by early next year.

‘Junkanoo Boyz’ end up in 2-2 draw

#The Junkanoo Boyz spoiled the Benna Boys chances of earning back-to-back wins when they secured a 2-2 draw yesterday evening in an away game in Piggotts, Antigua and Barbuda.

#In the second game of their October window in the Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Nations League matches, the senior men’s national team earned their first point in League B, Group D. The match got underway at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association’s Technical Center.

#Kevin Davies, assistant coach of the men’s national team, shared the difference in their approach on the road. “I think the biggest difference tonight was we played with a lot more heart and a lot more fight. We did not have that fire and passion when we played at home. The guys had enough losing and confided among themselves that they wanted to give some more and I think that was the difference today,” Davies said.

#Overall, he was happy with the team’s performance away from home turf.

#“It is a great feeling and shows that we can do it if we put in the effort, concentration, and the fight,” the assistant coach added.

#The Bahamas changed the pattern of the previous game, which saw the Benna Boys score first, by connecting on the first goal of the away game. Midfielder Nathan Wells took charge in the first five minutes of the match. With his teammate battling with their opponents’ defenders, Wells came from behind the penalty arc and sank the ball to the back of the net to give the national team an early 1-0 lead.

#Gameplay continued with the home team remaining scoreless until the 54th minute mark in the second half where midfielder Joshua Parker made good on the equalizer. He moved his way around the defenders and launched the ball from directly in front of the goal area to score.

#Five minutes later Thomas James Bramble, of Antigua and Barbuda, followed up his single goal from the last game at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium with another at home. At the 59th minute he scored on The Bahamas to give the home team a 2-1 advantage with under 60 minutes on the clock.

#The tides looked to be turning in favour of the Benna Boys once again until the visiting team’s forward Nahum Johnson converted on an equalizer late in the Nations League match. Following a throw-in with 82 minutes on the clock, Johnson kicked the ball over the head of Antigua and Barbuda’s goalkeeper to tie the match and secure the draw before the November window.

#The Junkanoo Boyz made some final attempts to go for the win, including a shot by Jean Tilo, but were unsuccessful.

#With the team looking ahead to the final window of the Nations League matches, coach Davies is confident yesterday’s win will give them a boost going into the next segment of the competition.

#“They showed that they can play with these guys and that they are not that much better than us, if better at all, if we play the way we want to play and can play we can get good results once the guys have confidence in themselves” he said.

#The national team will play their next two matches against the top teams in Group D, Guyana and Puerto Rico.

#Guyana leads the group with 12 points. Puerto Rico is ranked second with 6 points. Antigua and Barbuda has a total of 4 points and The Bahamas has one point in the League B, Group D rankings.

#Games commence for the primary schools of the south group at 10am today.

#GRAND Bahama native Jonquel “JJ” Jones has been on a tear in the postseason which helped the New York Liberty to keep their championship window open on Sunday in an elimination game against the Las Vegas Aces.

#The Brooklyn team handed the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) defending champions their first loss (87-73) of the postseason to make the series 2-1 behind a dominant performance from Jones on the weekend.

#The confidence of the former WNBA MVP and her team received a huge boost from their latest win after they avoided a sweep and currently remain in contention for their first franchise title.

#The Liberty forward has shown up in a big way for her team throughout the WNBA playoffs.

#Her performances have been brilliant since the opening round against the Washington Mystics.

#Since that series, the Grand Bahamian turned in eight consecutive double-double games to set a postseason record.

#Her eight-game streak came to an end this weekend but the post player put up one of her highest scoring games of the WNBA playoffs – leading her team with 27 points – in the game three win. With the Liberty’s backs against the wall, Jones stepped up to ensure the team did not go home. Along with her team-high 27 points, she pulled down eight rebounds.

#She also dished out three assists to help her teammates, and defensively she stopped three shots and picked up two steals.

#In the bout she was dangerous from behind the arc. The 6-foot-6 forward nailed four of the Liberty’s 13 made three-pointers in game three. She went 4-for-7 from behind the three-point line for 57 per cent shooting and went 10-for-15 from the field.

#The Grand Bahamian Liberty star has consistently been a staple for the team as she has improved on her regular season averages in points, rebounds and blocks in the postseason.

#She is the team’s second best scorer behind league MVP Breanna Stewart, with 18.2 points per game.

#Jones is currently leading the team in rebounds with 11.7 and blocks with 2.3, showing her defensive prowess in these playoffs.

#Now with a chance to tie the series or risk being sent home tonight at the Barclays Center, the Liberty will look to Jones to put on another show in New York. Game four of the best-of-five series is slated to begin at 8pm. The following game, if the series is extended, will take place at 9pm in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Michelob ULTRA Arena on Friday.

#Stakes will be high as the Aces are hoping to become the first team since the Los Angeles Sparks from 2001-2002 to earn back-to-back WNBA title honours.

#For the Liberty, they are trying to hang their first championship banner at the Barclays Center and Jones will fight to add a WNBA championship to her impressive list of accolades in her WNBA finals return.

University of The Bahamas Mingoes midfielder Ronaldo Green advances the ball as a Fort Lauderdale University player tries to play defense in their match at Lauderhill Park in Lauderhill, Florida, on Friday. The Mingoes won the match, 3-2. UB Athletics

LAUDERHILL, Florida – The University of The Bahamas (UB) Mingoes men’s soccer team had a tie under its belt heading into the match against Fort Lauderdale University on Friday and the team was determined to pull off a win. UB prevailed in a back and forth match.

Ronaldo Green turned in a hat trick for the Mingoes en route to a 3-2 win.

“It was a war,” said Head Coach Alex Thompson. “It was a very ugly game and a very hard fought game and I couldn’t be happier with the guys.”https://d54a2815f34151c0c72f4442010240a7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

The team started fast and aggressive under the overcast sky at the Lauderhill Park in Lauderhill, Florida. The match started under overcast skies that turned into a several short downpours.

In the 11th minute, winger Jervane Turnquest was attacking the goal and was tackled hard in the box resulting in a yellow card and penalty kick. Midfielder Ronaldo Green took the penalty shot for his first score of the match to put the Mingoes up 1-0.

Fort Lauderdale responded quickly with a quick goal in the 13th minute to tie the match at 1-1.

Green was undeterred and scored in the 19th minute on a brilliant attack to put UB up 2-1.

Fort Lauderdale responded just before the half to tie the match at 2-2.

In the second half, Green completed the hat trick with his third goal and put the Mingoes up 3-2. That took place in the 58th minute. Green clenched his fists and let out a scream and then dropped to his knees in celebration.

The Mingoes’ defense held off several attacks from Fort Lauderdale in the final minutes, including three strong shots on goal to pick up the 3-2 win.

Green said the third goal, which sealed the win and the hat trick, was important to him.

“The team was fighting a mental battle due to injuries and the game before that,” he said. “Many of the players played 90 minutes in the previous game so it was tough in this game. So, when I scored that third goal it was very emotional because we had to really fight in that match.”

Thompson said that Green, Turnquest, and goalkeeper Antonio Beckford had a spectacular performance through the two games.https://d54a2815f34151c0c72f4442010240a7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

“That’s an undefeated tour for us,” he said. “We further developed the culture and the DNA of the squad and I think it gives us a lot of confidence going into the next tour and the men’s league.”

The Mingoes will play Fort Lauderdale University again on October 26. That match is scheduled for 3 p.m. on October 26 in Lauderhill, Florida.

The Bahamas’ senior men’s national soccer team have a key rematch against Antigua and Barbuda in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Nations League tomorrow in Piggotts, Antigua and Barbuda.

The League B Group D match gets underway at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association’s Center at 3 p.m. today, and is a key matchup for Team Bahamas as they look to get out of fourth place in the group after Antigua and Barbuda turned them back 4-1 at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium on Saturday.

Head Coach for The Bahamas Nesly Jean said that they have to put Saturday’s game behind them and make adjustments.Giorgos Giakoumakis: Newcomer of the Year favorite?!Giorgos Giakoumakis: NextStay

“We need to stay focused and play our game. It is going to come to us but we have to be focused. The players have to be mentally ready for 90 minutes. We are going to make the adjustments,” Jean said. “We just must keep on talking to the players and encouraging them. We are going to make mistakes and this one is over, so we can only focus on the next game coming up. We are going to continue to give the guys the tools that they need to succeed.”

The Bahamas has yet to secure a point while Antigua and Barbuda has three points in the group. This is a pivotal game as The Bahamas looks to avoid a six-point deficit in the standings.

“Pressure is there,” Jean said. “We know we have the players and can do well. We have to limit our mistakes if we want to move forward.”

Antigua and Barbuda got the start they wanted in the last game with two goals in the first nine minutes. Antigua and Barbuda Head Coach Mikele Leigertwood is hoping that they get another fast start in today’s game.

“I am hoping that it will be a lot. We have players who thrive off confidence and momentum,” Leigertwood stated. “We have seen that we can score goals and create more chances. We are certainly looking forward to the trip going back to play at home in front of our home fans.”

The Bahamas’ lone goal scorer on Saturday, Wood Julmis, said that they need to trust Jean.

“We have to trust and believe when our coach gives us the free will to play. When our coach sets up the game plan, he gives us all the tools to go and perform to the best of our ability. We as players need to step up and trust our coach and execute the things that he wants us to do,” Julmis said.https://8bbbc9021b39c0bbc746193ca09bc6d4.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-40/html/container.html

Midfielder for Antigua and Barbuda Keiron Richards is looking for them to pick up where they left off and keep going.

“We needed this result (Saturday), not only to build confidence but we as a small country know what we can do and our fans know what we can do,” Richards said. “I have no doubt that we will get the three points at home and take this competition to the wire because we are trying to get to world cup.”

This is the final game in this Nations League window for both teams. They will play the third and final window in November. The dates for the two games in the November window will be announced at a later date.
