Bahamian professional basketball player with the Indiana Pacers Chavano ‘Buddy’ Hield scored a season and team-high 31 points on Wednesday night, but his squad dropped a 119-113 loss to the New York Knicks at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

Hield played 32 minutes in this contest and his efficient 13-point fourth quarter outburst was not enough as the Pacers, who were down by 14 at the beginning of the fourth, kept chipping away at the lead but ended up falling by six. The loss drops the Pacers to a 23-19 win/loss record and seventh in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Knicks moved up one spot ahead of the Pacers. They have an identical record, but the Knicks lead the season series 2-0 with two more to play.

Grand Bahama native Hield was scorching hot from beyond the three-point arc in the game as he made seven three-point shots, tying a season-high for made three-point shots. He brought his total to 23 made shots from deep in the first five games this month. Overall, he went 11-for-20 from the field, shooting 55 percent, and 7-for-15 from deep, 46.7 percent from that distance. He grabbed eight rebounds.

His career-high in points is 42.

After the Knicks went up 95-81 at the end of the third quarter, the Pacers had to dig down deep to make a comeback. The sixth-year player led that charge. He pulled up and made a three-point shot at the 3:10 mark to pull the Pacers within two points, 105-103, but the Knicks controlled the tempo the rest of the way.

After the Knicks’ lead was stretched to seven points with 1:34 left in the game, 112-105, Hield made a three-pointer on their next offensive possession, at the 1:22 mark, while being fouled, to set up a chance for a four-point play. He completed the four-point play and the Knicks led 112-109 at that point. Hield had a chance to tie it up with 49.1 seconds left in the game but he missed a three-point shot.

The Knicks went up 115-109 before Hield made a layup with 21.1 seconds left in the game. The Knicks held on for the victory. The Pacers never led in this game and lost

starting point guard Tyrese Haliburton to a knee injury in the third quarter.

The Pacers got hit early in the game as the Knicks went up 37-21 at the end of the first quarter. As a team, the Knicks shot better from deep as they went 15-for-42 (35.7 percent) while the Pacers went 12-for-39 (30.8 percent).

It has been a good month for Hield offensively as he is averaging 21.2 points in five games – above his season average of 18.3 points per game. He is even collecting rebounds at a higher rate in January – 5.8 this month compared to his season average of 4.9 rebounds per game. He is shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from deep in January.

Hield and the Pacers return to action at 7 o’clock this evening when they host the Atlanta Hawks at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bahamian DeAndre Ayton, the starting center of the Phoenix Suns, missed his second straight game with a left ankle sprain on Wednesday. The Suns got blown out, 126-97, by the Denver Nuggets in that game. It was on the back end of back-to-back games for the Suns. In the first game, the night before, the Suns won 125-113 over the Golden State Warriors.

After the loss to the Nuggets, the Suns sport a 21-22 record on the season and are seventh in the Western Conference of the NBA. They are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

Ayton could return to the court when the Suns play the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, tonight. That game gets underway at 8 o’ clock.

#INTERNATIONAL tennis teams from USA, Barbados and Canada will be joining The Bahamas team for the sixth bi-annual International Tennis Clubs (IC) Caribbean Doubles Week Championship from Monday, January 16 to Friday, January 20.

#This week-long event features top older players from these countries playing men’s, ladies and mixed doubles in combined age pair categories from 105 to 125 years.

#The Bahamas team is captained by Neil Mactaggart. Among his players will be former top Caribbean, Davis Cup Captain and player John Antonas.

#Also on that team will be the No.1 ITF ranked lady in the world in the 75+ age category. This is Sue Kimball who for many years was a teacher here and has kept up strong contact with The Bahamas and its International Tennis Club (IC) ever since those days.

#The event is being hosted at Nassau Lawn Tennis Club on Market Street.

#The Nassau Lawn Club was established in 1880 and is one of the very oldest clubs in the whole Americas region. It is almost exactly the same age as Wimbledon.

#There will be two inter country matches each day starting at 9.30am and 1.30pm with all teams playing every other team over the five days to decide the eventual champion team.

#The USA are the current holders of this title.

#Each inter country match consists of two men’s doubles, one ladies’ double and two mixed doubles matches.

#The International Tennis Clubs (IC) are made up of 40 countries around the world. They consist of top international players and national title holders in their country who respect the IC Tradition of “Hands across the net, friendship across the ocean”.

#As well as organising many international tennis events around the world for member countries, they sponsor The IC Rod Laver Junior Challenge.

#This is held bi-annually on every continent with the winning teams going to the World-wide Finals which recently has been held in Wimbledon, Monte Carlo and Japan.

#This is fully sponsored by the IC organisation at no cost to the juniors.

#The IC also has a philanthropic section that runs and sponsors many projects around the world for juniors in poor areas.

#This is part of the IC tradition of top players who are invited to join and give back to the world of tennis. For more information on IC activities, go to www. ictennis.net

#The Council of

#International Lawn

#Tennis Clubs

#In 2009, IC Philanthropy was established by the IC Council to teach tennis to disadvantaged children.

#In some communities, the sport provides an alternative path from life on the streets and the dangers of drugs and crime.

#Bahamas IC President, Kit Spencer, who will be playing in the event, thanked sponsor Winterbotham Trust for not only helping with staging this international event but also for their great help in sponsoring The Winterbotham IC Junior Series over recent years.

#This has enabled many young Bahamians to get in to tennis competition in an enjoyable way and help the BLTA develop junior tennis.

T-Bird Flyers Track Classic this weekend

As of Friday, January 13, 2023

#By BRENT STUBBS

#Senior Sports Reporter

#bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

#THE T-Bird Flyers Track Classic will be the first meet out of the gate as the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ 2023 season officially gets underway this weekend at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

#And according to the T-Bird Flyers Track Club’s head coach Foster Dorsett, they are anticipating a grand time as the meet starts at 6pm today and wraps up on Saturday, starting at noon.

#“With this being the first meet of the year, what we do is we give the kids an opportunity to see where they are going into the season,” Dorsett said.

#“We have some great expectations from them because this is the CARIFTA year and we want to have a really good showing.

#“So we feel that the coaches have been doing a great job getting the kids ready and I know the kids are eager to compete in their first meet of the year.

#“We anticipate that we might have some qualifiers for the CARIFTA Games because the kids have their sights of competing for the Bahamas.”

#The Bahamas is playing host to the 50th Golden CARIFTA Games April 7-11 as a part of the 50th anniversary of the nation, so Dorsett said this year’s meet is going to be very special.

#He said the athletes will find out that there will be events in all age group categories that will enable them to compete at their best.

#While they are expecting close to 600 athletes to compete, Dorsett said they are aware that some of the athletes from Queen’s College, who hosted their inter-school track meet on Thursday and St Augustine’s College, whose inter-house meet is today, may not have all of their athletes compete.

#“The meets are just too close in these instances, so we know that not all of the athletes from these two schools will compete,” Dorsett said.

#“They are some of the top athletes who could be vying for spots on the CARIFTA team, but we still expect some of their athletes to compete.

#“We also still have a lot of athletes who are eager to compete in the meet, so we expect that there will be some keen competition. We have some athletes coming in from Grand Bahama and some of the Family Islands, so the meet should be an exciting one.”

#Additionally, Dorsett, who now serves as the first vice president of the BAAA and a member of the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials (BACO), said they will be honouring two fallen members of BACO.

#“We will be remembering our past president Courtney Wallace and our senior official Ivy Charlton,” Dorsett said. “We will be honouring and recognising them posthumously during the meet for their contributions to the sport of track and field.”

GHS Magic slow down RM Bailey Pacers 39-33

As of Friday, January 13, 2023

#By BRENT STUBBS

#Senior Sports Reporter

#bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

#While the RM Bailey Pacers senior girls prevailed over the Government High Magic, the Magic senior boys avenged the defeat by knocking off the Pacers in their Government Secondary Schools Sports Association double header at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium yesterday.

#RM Bailey doubled up Government High 56-24 in the senior girls opener, while GHS prevailed with a 39-33 win in the senior boys’ feature contest.

#Pacers 56, Magics 24: Vincinique Dames canned a game high 21 points and Janea Ariste had 17 points to pace RM Bailey to victory. Chadanay Knowles helped out with seven.

#Teajah Johnson, the captain for the Pacers, said their coach Keisha Pratt had them clicking on all cylinders.

#“I think we did good. We can work on some things, but we were able to get the ball where we needed it to go,” said Johnson, a 17-year-old 12th grader.

#“We’ve been practicing well, so we just have to perfect our craft by playing more defence and getting the ball in the paint.”

#Dames, their major benefactor when they did get the ball in the paint, said it was a good feeling to get the first game under their belt. “Our defence was a bit slack. I’m sure we could do better,” Dames said. “Once we can work on our defence, we will be much better.”

#Dames scored nine and Ariste had five in the first quarter as RM Bailey raced out to an impressive 19-7 lead and they were never challenged. They took a 33-14 lead into the half as Dames connected on six and Ariste had four in the second period.

#Things slowed down a bit in the second half for the Pacers, who held onto a 47-21 margin at the end of the final break. They went on an 8-6 run in the fourth to preserve the win.

#Roshan Ingraham scored 13 points and Rihanna Ferguson had four in the loss for Government High, whose coach Bernice Penn said they knew they had their work cut out for them.

#“I guess the kids were nervous, but we came in here knowing that we are going to be working on our development,” said Penn, who was assisted by Salathial Dean. “I’m proud of the girls. We got a little nervous and were shaky out there, but this is just day one. Our next game is on Monday, so hopefully we will get it together and play much better.”

#Magic 39, Pacers 33: With two of their starters not playing, Lens Dolcine led Government High to victory in their senior boys’ match-up with 10 points.

#Rasheed Brennen had eight, Lathario Babbs had six and Peter Tilusnord added five to help preserve the win.

#Government High doubled up the score at the end of the first quarter with a 12-6 lead, but RM Bailey cut it down to two (23-21) at the half.

#The Magic stayed out front 31-27 at the end of the third and they out-scored the Pacers 8-6 in the fourth to clinch the win.

#Coach Elkin Sherman gave his team a grade of C-plus.

#“Honestly, we could have played better. We were missing two starters, but with this air-conditioning in here, it was killing the boys, but we just had to thug it out,” Sherman said. “Our two starters were out with the flu going around, but I had to keep the rest of our team strong.”

#Bryson Rolle also scored 10 in a losing effort for the Pacers, who also got seven from Kendrick Emilien and six from Isaiah Williams. Coach Devon Miller said they still have a lot of work to do.

#“Today, we didn’t follow the game plan. We missed one or two others. Other than that, we did fairly well,” he said.

#“This is their first time out. We didn’t have a scrimmage. “We had a short pre-season to prepare. I think the next time out, we will be much better.”

#Looking back at their performances, Miller said the most important thing they have to work on is their “defence, lay-ups and free throws.”

Albury, Greene help Chipola to 20th straight win

Bahamian junior collegiate basketball player Deyton Albury goes up for two points in this file photo.

Bahamians Deyton Albury and Paul Greene helped the Chipola College Indians to its 20th straight victory of the season on Wednesday as they took care of the Pensacola State College Pirates, 64-61, in a road victory at the Hartsell Arena in Pensacola, Florida.

The win has the Indians with an unblemished 20-0 win/loss record on the season and a 2-0 record in the Panhandle Conference. It also guaranteed that the Indians would stay as the top ranked team in the country in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Offensively, it was a low-scoring night for both Albury and Greene. Albury finished the night scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds while dishing out two assists in the 21 minutes he was on the floor. He finished 1-for-2 from the field including going 1-for-1 from deep. He also had a steal. Greene played 18 minutes and went 1-for-1 and grabbed three rebounds. He had three points, two steals and a block.

The Indians had a 34-31 advantage at the end of the first half. Although the Pirates made five more three-pointers than the Indians, 18-13, the Indians were able to make 10 more free throws than the Pirates, 16-6.

Chipola had a good night from the field where they finished shooting 42.1 percent. The Pirates won the turnover battle (14 for the Indians and eight for the Pirates) and the rebounding battle, 35-28.

In their previous game, which was on Saturday on their home court at the Milton H. Johnson Center, in Marianna, Florida, the Indians took care of the nationally number 25 ranked Northwest Florida State College Raiders (14-5). They squeaked by the Raiders, 75-74.

Albury had a tough time shooting the ball that night, going 2-for-8 from the field. He scored seven points to go along with three assists, three steals and two blocks. He also had one rebound in 25 minutes of play. The guard was able to finish 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Greene scored six points on 2-for-3 shooting from the field and made both of his free throws. He also grabbed three rebounds and had a steal in 21 minutes.

At the 1:19 mark of the second half, Albury made two free throws to put them up 75-66. That turned out to be two key free throws as the Raiders ended the game on an 8-0 run.

Both teams shot around the same percentage from the field with the Indians finishing at 47.5 percent while the Raiders finished at 46.3 percent.

Albury is averaging 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He is shooting 50.7 percent from the field. Greene is averaging 8.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Indians will look to go to 21-0 on Saturday when they host Gulf Coast State College at 4 p.m.

#THE fourth edition of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas charity golf tournament saw the team of Andrew Bell and Marcus Farrington emerge as the champions on Majority Rule Day yesterday at the Baha Mar resort’s Royal Blue Golf Course.

#The duo, playing under the team of Sands Beer, posted a net score of 53.10 to beat out the team of David Bethel and Aiden Gorospe, who shot 49.50. The third finishers were the pair of Billy Holowesko and Madison Carroll with 48.70.

#A full field of 104 golfers participated in the two-man scramble that raised close to $100,000 for the Cancer Society of the Bahamas, according to Phil Andrews, one of the tournament committee members.

#For Bell and Farrington, it was a total team effort.

#“It was just all, just ham and egg. When I was out in the hole, my partner carried me and he was in it. He was the egg,” Farrington said.

#Bell, a former national team swimmer and cyclist, said they just came out to relax. “Our last tournament, we didn’t play too well. We were probably a little too tense,” he said. “But we came out here and saw a lot of the professionals dressed in their orange and black, and the other teams, so we just decided to come out and have some fun.”

#To do it one shot at a time, Farrington said they did it for his grandmother Sue Roberts, who was the woman behind the formation of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas and Jimmy Sands and Sands Beer.

#As the runners-up, Bethel and Gorospe said they were pleased with their accomplishments.

#“It was a lot of fun. Aiden carried the team with putts all day. He made it look so easy as one of the young and coming juniors,” Bethel said. “He’s going to show what the Bahamas can do in the future. I’m glad I played with him.”

#Gorospe, however, refused to take all of the credit.

#“He sunk some putts some time and he helped us as a team to win,” said Gorospe, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Windsor Academy. “It was great to play with him and to finish as the second best team.”

#Although they were third, it was a good effort.

#“I felt that it was great. I just needed to work on my putting and I know my iron shots were off, but on the last hole, I made the shot for birdie,” said Carroll, a 12-year-old sixth grader at Tambearly School.

#She noted that she couldn’t ask for a better partner than Holowesko, who helped her as they talked about each aspect of their game as they played the course.

#“It was a wonderful opportunity to play with such a talented junior,” said Holowesko, one of the top Bahamian sailors. “It was nice to get her perspective on what she likes to do on the golf course and what is her favourite hole. We had a great time out there. It was unexpected that we got third, but we just grinded it out.”

#Finishing in order to receive awards were the teams of Luke McCarroll and Mackenzie Brown, fourth with 48.65, Steve Tiller and Brent Chapman, fifth with 48.50, Phil Andrews and Sean Albury, sixth with 47.95, Jim Laroda and John Reckley, seventh with 47.90, Phil Gorman and Richie King, Alistar Chisnall and Curtis Robinson, eighth with 47.80, Marc Robinson and Jimi Thompson, ninth with 47.55, 10th with 47.00 and Neala Jones and Paul Winder, 11th with 46.70.

#Sue Roberts, of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas, said they are very pleased to host the event for the fourth year because it’s for such a worthy cause.

#“It brings out a lot of people and there’s great camaraderie and it’s played on such a wonderful golf course, but I have never played golf in my life,” she said.

#“There’s not one family in the Bahamas that has not been affected by cancer, so it touches everybody’s heart.”

#Gina Gonzalez-Rolle, a committee member for the Cancer Society golf tournament, said they had a great event.

#“We had a wonderful day, the weather was well and everyone had a great time and we had wonderful prizes to give out,” Gonzalez-Rolle said. “We want to thank everyone for their support, everyone who volunteered and came out and worked and all of the sponsors.”

#The committee, according to Gonzalez-Rolle, is now looking at how they can improve on this year’s tournament as they start to prepare for the fifth edition next year.
